Well... all good things must come to an end. It has been a great pleasure to do this retrospective series for you all, and so, I figure we should go out with a bang.
All these characters that we've come to know have come a very long way... but where are they now?
Camila Noceda has a few more gray hairs now, and the kind of glasses your grandma wears, but that just means she's well on her way to becoming a cool old lady!
Luz Noceda, now off to study wild magic in the demon realm, is back to her old, cheery, dorky self once again! She really has come such a long way, and it really is so great to see her like her old self again. Our girl is all grown up!
Vee is now a proud member of the Noceda family. After spending a good portion of her life on the run, she finally has the safe home and loving family that she deserves. The Titan/Earth symbol on her shirt is a nice way of showing how both realms are home to her now.
Also, I think it's a nice touch that during this time-skip scene, the camera follows Owlbert, of all characters. It was Owlbert digging up Luz's Azura book from the trash that led her into the demon realm in the first place, so it's only fitting that we, the audience, follow him into the demon realm here.
"WELCOME TO THE BOILING ISLES! WATCH YOUR STEP!" shouts a prerecorded message from the Collector.
Wait... what if you DON'T watch your step? Do you fall into the VOID and be cursed to exist outside of time and space? Or does the Collector just want to make sure you don't trip and fall flat on your face whilst entering the demon realm?
A very nice detail that I honestly never noticed before: Notice the buildings on the now-vertical left arm of the Titan. The people living there just adapted by building new buildings at a nearly 90-degree angle, thus making them level on the Titan's upraised arm. Really cool detail that I don't know how I missed before!
And the first friendly face we meet in the demon realm is Willow Park, having fulfilled her flyer derby dreams. Her shirt has the logo of her team, the Emerald Entrails, the name that Hunter came up with back in the episode "Any Sport in a Storm", and it's a name that stuck. She's definitely come a long way and greatly boosted her self-confidence.
Also, she has spikes on her gloves and kneepad... she WILL hurt you if necessary.
Remember Braxas, the demon toddler with the horrifyingly deep voice? Our boy's growing up! And maybe his voice is even more horrifyingly deep now! And he's receiving his very own palisman, accompanied by his father, the former Warden Wrath.
Back in "Elsewhere and Elsewhen", Dell Clawthorne said he was working with the Bat Queen to preserve the palistrom trees, and also that he hoped to have an apprentice to carry on the trade. Turns out, he found an apprentice in Hunter. It's very fitting that he became a palisman carver after his own palisman changed his life for the better. He has a new palisman now, Waffles, but will never forget all that Flapjack did for him.
Also, the Bat Queen's kids are growing up... they sure look like a riot.
Notice anything familiar about Hunter's shoes?
In case you were wondering... yes, that was confirmed to be a reference to Lightning McQueen.
I sincerely hope that Hunter is happy in his awesome Lightning McQueen shoes. The boy deserves it so much.
Gone but not forgotten. This is honestly just so heartbreakingly sweet. Flapjack really saved Hunter, it's so beautiful that he and the rest of the Hexsquad keep his memory alive.
Another note: The flowers Willow grows on Flapjack's tombstone are forget-me-nots. I don't think the name requires any explanation.
Morton, whom Eda bought her elixirs from, is still in business, while Boscha has opened up her own grudgby gear stand. She appears later at Luz's party, and seems happy to be there, so it seems to me like she's definitely worked on improving herself as a person over the previous 4 years. Good for her, actually!
A disgraced Kikimora is now doing manual labor under the supervision of Matt Tholomule. Honestly, that has got to be torture... good, she deserves it.
Hooty as a museum curator? Now I'd go to that museum!
Also love the detail of Lilith reminding herself to write to her old mentor/rival Flora D'Splora just to show off.
Lilith Clawthorne is now arguably the greatest bad girl historian in all the Boiling Isles. She looks like a very kickass grandma now, I love it.
Quick! To the HINDENBLIGHT!
Amity Blight is now... well... a badass engineer/sky pirate/apprentice historian? Yes... let's go with that.
The spoiled, bratty princess from Season 1 is nowhere to be seen. Instead, she's followed in her father's footsteps to become a rough, dirty engineer, which honestly, just feels so right for her. Engineer Amity is the best.
Think about this: These two only ever previously interacted in the episode "Covention". They were both such different people back then, and it's great to see just how much they've both grown.
Also, Hooty is staring into your soul... look away.
Harpy Lilith! It's honestly really beautiful how she split the curse with her sister and learned how to live with it like she did.
Anyways... HOOTY IS AIRBORNE! RUN!
Skara now works as a teacher at Hexside. Honestly, for such a minor character, she had quite a bit of character development, going from one of Boscha's sidekicks to joining Willow's flyer derby team to becoming a teacher herself.
And Barcus is a teacher too. He looks very scholarly in his uniform, borf borf.
Hieronymus Bump is now retired and works as a gardener. He can't endanger the lives of any children anymore... I think. He probably still commits some crimes from time to time, I have to respect the grind.
Bo, Viney, and Emira Blight are now part of a team of healers who found a way to remove coven sigils.
Whatever these two's deal is... I'm glad they put their silly rivalry behind them.
Also... aww, Alador's got a little pocket abomination! He probably couldn't take Ratlador to the hospital with him anyway.
This kid who had his coven sigil removed actually appears back in the episode "Covention" having his sigil put on, and Eda says that from that point on, he'll only be able to do one type of magic. And here he is now, being the first witch to have a sigil successfully removed! Although there's nothing anyone can do about his acne.
Former Bard Coven head Raine Whispers is now working with fellow researcher Jerbo on the sigil removal project, having just successfully removed a sigil from their first patient.
Darius Deamonne is now arguably the father figure Hunter needs in his life. He's such a dad here, I love it.
Okay, so notice where the University of Wild Magic is located...
If I am correct (and don't quote me on this), the University of Wild Magic is located in the same place where the Emperor's Castle once stood. Which is very fitting, honestly... a lasting insult to the green, gooey turd.
Edric Blight now teaches at the University of Wild Magic. Eda told him in the episode "Reaching Out" that he had a future in wild magic, and she was right. Good on the boy for doing something with his life!
The Keeper of the Looking Glass Graveyard is a professor too. Very happy for this crazy old man. Like I said before, I wish to aspire to be a crazy old man as well.
Gus Porter teaches his students about the wonders of the human realm. I think I said this before, but dang... they all grow up so fast!
And he's still wearing Adrian's magic amplifier that he took in the episode "Labyrinth Runners" and has had with him ever since.
Notice how outside the doors to Eda's office are III and IV, two of the basilisks created by Belos along with Vee. Glad to see that Vee's Boiling Isles family is safe and sound.
Another detail: One of them is playing Eda's old bell cittern.
Eda Clawthorne is now the headmaster of the University of Wild Magic. Once the mentor to Luz the Human, she is now able to teach wild magic to the entirety of the Boiling Isles.
Also, the fact she gave herself a pirate hook is really, really cool.
"Yargh, she stole me look!"
Shut up, Foxy, don't make me throw you into the Grand Canyon again!
King Clawthorne is slightly taller now, and his horns and tusks seem to have grown. He's looking more and more like his old man every day, but nevertheless is proud to be a Clawthorne, having his initials engraved into his collar.
Still madly in love with each other after all this time. They really are perfect for each other.
The Snaggleback, having previously been employed as the Grom disco ball in "Enchanting Grom Fright", once again finds himself dangling from a rope. Hooty, meanwhile, seems very eager to beat the crap out of him... what'd he ever do to you, Hooty?
Steve is still being, well... Steve. He's covered in bugs, but that's normal for Steve!
I love how one of the last lines of the series is Luz thanking Eda and King for everything. Earlier in the episode, when she died and went to the in-between realm, she regretted having not thanked them, but now is finally able to tell them.
I'll say it again: The familial relationship between Luz, Eda, and King is arguably the heart of this show. They really are such a wonderful family.
"Weirdos?"
"Weirdos!"
This scene just warms my heart. I love this family of weirdos so much.
Well... before I wrap up this post, I just want to say thanks to all of you who have joined me on this wild ride. It really has been a great pleasure for me to do this retrospective series and share all the bits I found interesting with you all. It really saddens me to bring this to an end, but I'm happy to have been able to do this in the first place. I really do hope all of you have enjoyed this as much as I have.
And what's more... I'd like to thank The Owl House itself, for reminding me that it's okay to be a weirdo. Thank you, Luz, Eda, King, Amity, Willow, Gus, Hooty, Lilith... hell, even smelly old Belos, whom I absolutely love to hate, for being such a big part of my life. I definitely haven't known you all as long as some of my other hyperfixations, but you've been a big part of my life these past few years and I can't thank you enough.
Anyways, with all that said... let's get onto the final shot of the entire show...
"BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-"
WAIT... HOLD ON JUST A SECOND...
WHAT IS BRO DOING HERE?
WHO INVITED BRO?
GOD DAMN YOU, TIBBLES, YOU RUINED MY POST ENDING!
Okay... let's try that again...
"BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
Pings:
Thank you all, once again, for joining me on this wild ride 'till the end. Goodbye, and don't forget: us weirdos have to stick together!
