Luz had been to the principal's office four times for her increasingly disruptive behavior. Luz was well on her way to either institutionalization or incarceration if she wasn't brought under control. Reality Check Camp was a lesser intervention than juvie. In the end we learned that the other kids there enjoyed the experience and came out as better, more socially skilled people.

Anyway it turned out that Luz never went anyway.
