They'd hit the Earth's core at some point, and the temperatures there couldn't be survived by any human (or basilisk)

Also, it's been proven by scientists that if you were able to dig a hole straight through Earth from the US, you'd end up in Argentina because the US and China are on the same hemisphere

Besides, the TOH gang are just too censored for the Chinese

1. No one said Hooty had to dig in a straight line. He likely bypassed the core, whichever route was the most direct between Connecticut and China.

2. I'm going to assume if you went through the Earth's core in Hooty, he'd provide you with protection.

Still, I find it ironic that they're going to the People's Republic of China. I don't think they have very good social credit scores. Although I think Camila mentioned digging a tunnel to China as a joke and didn't expect Hooty to actually follow through with it. I don't think any of them would WANT to go to the People's Republic of China.

(Obviously please don't take that the wrong way, obviously the reason I'm poking fun at China is because the government is terrible and mistreats its citizens.)
