Leeeet's go!
---------------
Eda shot up sweating in a flash. Hyperventilating and rustling the leaves beneath her.
She looked towards her sleeping sister, who was letting out light snores with every breath, and the quiet house-demon that lay curled across the ground.
She calmed her breath while an uneasiness climbed up from the pit of her stomach. She felt the claw around her heart clench twice, making her flinch, before letting go and returning to its still state. She took another breath, now bitter, and propped herself up.
Her heartbeat began to rise, and her head returned to throbbing in its pain. A look of great concern instinctively growing on her face, she squeezed her eyes shut and tried to find the Owl Beast within her.
Calm down. Breathe.
It took a while, but once Eda reached a state of momentary peace, she met eyes with the Owl Beast under a plotting, grey sky. The environment was chilling, but not cold. Grey waves flowed and crashed into each other to the left of them, Eda and the beast sat still in unfeeling sand.
‘Come here,’ she whispered in her mind to the little bird.
It followed.
The beast crawled into her lab, circling twice before settling. She placed a hand on its chest, feeling its own heart thump. Fingers caressed its calmingly soft feathers, and she felt the creature twitch in joy.
Eda smiled, then rubbed its belly again.
‘You like that, don’t you?’ she breathed.
It was such a simple, innocent being.
She turned it around in her lap so that their faces met.
‘You’re not gonna be okay, you know that?’
Waves crashed again as did the shore in her heart. Uneasy, not ready to let go.
The beast just looked at her blankly. It knew.
It turned and nuzzled its beak into the crook of Eda’s arm, chirping out a few melodic notes.
‘We might as well enjoy life while it lasts,’ it sang.
Eda sighed and let a longing smile escape onto her lips.
Something loud fuzzily scrambled itself at her. The vision became blurry, the waves became still, and the beast was no longer there.
Lilith: Edalyn!
Her eyes re-focused. She shook her head and rubbed them, the bodily pain all returning to be on par with its emotional counterpart.
Eda: Gah, Titan, Lily, that…
Eda just rolled her eyes.
How long had she been in that state? The sun was rising now, bright orange glow casting itself across every inch of the Titan. It was definitely pitch-black when she had woken up earlier.
Lilith: We’re going, no?
Oh, Titan, Hooty was up too.
Hooty: YEAH, EDA, WE’RE GOING TODAY! REMEMBER?
That damn screech, as if her headache couldn’t get any worse.
Eda: Yes, Hooty, I remember. I just…
Lilith turned around from stuffing her backpack and looked at Eda with inquisitive eyes.
Lilith: You just…?
Lilith’s stare grew, and she grew impatient.
Lilith: …Doooon’t want to go? Is that it, Edalyn?
Eda sighed.
Eda: It is. I don’t.
Lilith rolled her eyes and spun around to sit on the log on the other side of the campfire. Eda begrudgingly sat on the log across from her.
Lilith: What’s all this now? You were the one who was so invested in taking down the Emperor and stopping all our lives to do so.
Eda sucked in a sharp breath.
Eda: I know, I just… he just…
Lilith’s annoyance morphed into careful concern.
Lilith: Did he… did he do something to you, Eda?
Eda bit her lip. Her eyes told Lilith all she needed to know.
Lilith rushed around and held Eda’s hand in her own.
Lilith: Why didn’t you tell me this?
Eda: Because, he- he didn’t. It’s just what he almost did. [shakily] What he could do. What he wants to. What he will.
Tears teased the back of Eda’s eyes.
Lilith: Edalyn, you know I care about you. If you can’t go back, we won’t.
Eda: It’s not that, I have- I want to go back.
She lied.
Eda: I just… if I’m going to do anything, I want it to be around the people I love. You can’t leave me again.
Lilith fell to her knees, teary-eyed herself.
Lilith: I’m so sorry, I never meant it like that. I didn’t even consider the impact I’d have on you, I… I thought I was alone in my pain.
Eda gently squeezed her sister’s hand.
Eda: I know. But you’re not, and you never will be.
She drew back her arm to cup Lilith’s face.
Eda: With this spell declared, let the pain be shared.
A brief moment of silence spread across them.
Lilith blinked away her tears, slowly standing up and dusting off her tattered dress.
Lilith: We should get going. But if at any point you want to turn back, just tell me.
Eda smiled beyond her pain.

Making his way to his friend’s tent, Alador almost tripped when his goggles fell down in his face. Readjusting them with one hand, tray in the other, he finally reached the place. It was inconveniently far from the main camp. Strange.
Alador: Darius! I knew you don’t like soup, so I brought a sand-
He narrowed his eyes and scanned the empty room.
Alador: Well, huh. You’re not here.
He placed the tray down and checked the ground for footprints, but all he found were his own to the tent. The wind had rustled the leaves and the ground enough since either of them had been there. That means Darius hadn’t just left, which means he would be further on if he’d travelled, meaning he would be harder to find.
Alador sighed.
He stood still for a moment. Go back to the war tent, or look for Darius? He questioned. Help the rebellion… or find Darius? Truly inquisitive.
Alador: Hhmmm…
He raised his eyebrows and looked up.
…Darius, he mentally spoke his decision and definitely did not blush at the thought.

By the time Eda, Lilith and Hooty reached camp, the evening was upon them.
Eda: Titan, Lily, you brought us far.
Lilith lazily chuckled in response, too fixated on their destination.
Lilith: …Wow.
She was wide-eyed, Eda saw as she stepped in front. Eda laughed.
Eda: These are just the sleeping tents, not even the establishment. You’re that far removed from society?
Lilith chuckled again.
Lilith: I guess so.
Hooty slowly crept his neck around Lilith’s back to see the same sight. He was unimpressed, given he didn’t scream about it.
Eda: You wanna get some food? Check out the war room, maybe?
Lilith: E-Eda, are you sure you’re okay with this?
She pulled both of Lilith’s hands into her one. She looked directly in her eyes.
Eda: I’m sure.
Eda reassuringly nodded. She wasn’t, but what did her feelings matter at this point? They had to get somewhere.
At last, they made their way to the main camp. Stepping inside the kitchen tent, Eda immediately rushed to the keg in the corner.
Eda: UGH, I’ve missed this stuff.
Returning to Lilith with a cup overflowing with Apple Blood, she noticed the couple of stares she was getting from within the place.
Eda: What?
She mockingly shook her head at them, wide-eyed. They all awkwardly turned back to their own conversations.
Eda: That’s what I thought.
Looking down, Lilith giggled.
Lilith: I’ve missed your antics.
Eda shot her a smile.
Lilith crept around the place uneasily, that was, until she found tiny sandwiches. She raised her eyebrows and slowly brought one to her mouth, shoving in several afterwards.
Eda laughed.
Lilith: What?
Lilith shook her head just like Eda had.
Lilith: I’ve missed real food.
She laughed.
Eda playfully sighed.
I don’t know why I ever left, Lilith thought.
***
Her last thought immediately fell to nothing as she was reminded exactly why. Stepping in to the war tent with her sister, she caught a coven head speaking just the words she didn’t need to hear:
Adrian: We’ve lost a lot of our loved ones and our own in this war, not to mention those currently suffering as a result of it.
She was killing her sister.
Her hand drifted away from Eda’s. Eda turned.
Eda: [whisper] You okay?
Lilith: Yeah, yeah.
She lied.
Her heart crept up to her throat and it burned like acid. But she didn’t want to let Eda know, because that would probably result in a continuation of the very cycle they were just stuck in.
Adrian suddenly caught glance of the two sisters – and Hooty – in the very back of the room by the entrance.
Adrian: Oh, Owl Lady! You’re back!
He started pushing his way through the crowd to get to her. He smiled at Eda, which made her a little nauseous, but she awkwardly smiled back nonetheless.
Adrian: While we will be primarily using illusions to take down the Emperor,
He swiftly grabbed Eda’s hand and raised her arm.
Adrian: This is a very big one of our assets.
Eda: Uh, Aid, I’m not so sure about th-
Adrian: Why ever not!?
She lowered her voice to a whisper and pulled away her arm.
Eda: I’m dying… I can’t really… transform anymore.
Adrian’s expression morphed from one of confidence to one of cringe. He nodded, then turned back to the listening crowd.
Adrian: Nevermind, then. I still have faith we can do this.
He made his way back up to the front.
Adrian: But – and, ugh, I hate to say this – we’re going to need all magic and everyone we can get. So tell your local tentmate to join the fight and end this fear once and for all. We’ll meet here again in three days time, high noon. Got it?
He was sure full of himself, that was for one. But Eda… she almost started to trust his words?
All the meanwhile, Lilith’s heart raced laps in her throat, so dizzy she could barely stand. She was sweating and starting to hyperventilate, and Eda noticed.
Still at a whisper, Eda caught her terrified eyes. Lilith was panicking, bad.
Eda: Lily, do you want to go to your tent? Come on, we don’t have to be here.
Her sister said nothing, so she dragged her outside and looked her in the eyes.
Eda: Lily, talk to me.
Lilith: A- actually, can- can I sleep in yours? Instead?
Eda: Oh, thank Titan, of course you can.
She smiled to her poor sister, then let out a rough exhale. She guided Lilith to her tent.
As they entered Eda’s tent, Lilith had since begun to calm down.
Eda: Oh, sorry, there’s only one bed. I’ll sleep on the floor, you can-
Lilith promptly plopped down on the bed and looked up at her sister with tired eyes. She was out of her panic now.
Lilith: Look, why don’t you go find Raine? I’ll be okay, I might just… fall asl..
She started to droop down. Eda felt sharp nails clutch at her heart.
Eda: DON’T-
Lilith flinched and opened her eyes again. Eda breathed.
Eda: Don’t talk to me about Raine, please.
Lilith sleepily nodded. Eda briefly closed her eyes to take a calming breath, and when she opened them Lily was fully asleep on her back. That was quick, she almost giggled.
With a sigh, Eda looked through her chest of possessions to find something suitable to sleep on. It wasn’t very late, but, honestly, the walking was a lot for a woman in her state. She scrounged up some dresses and laid them down to make a little mattress. Certainly more comfortable than the forest ground. Letting sleep consume her, she briefly met eyes with the Owl Beast before she completely fell into a non-conscious state. For just a little while, she was at peace, temporary as it may be.
