As always, a perfectly normal day, a perfectly normal walk through the city on his way to the market. MK had a short list of ingredients that they had run out of, so he was going to restock before hanging out with Mei.
Carrots and onions were pretty easy to pick out, while a few different spices were a bit harder. There were a lot to keep track of and some were made specifically for demons like Red Son who could handle it, while others were better for humans.
It was hard to pay attention to the labels when all he could think about was finally relaxing after everything that happened in the last year and a half or so.
But many of the bottles had cutesy art of humans or demons on them ranging through spice, so that made it easier.
He picked up a few of the lighter spices for the shop and one of the stronger ones just for when Red Son came by. Pigsy seemed to have some sort of history with the Chaos Ultra Ghost Pepper of Doom, but it was also the only pepper that seemed to satiate the fire demon, so he just kept it hidden. He also ended up buying a few herbs he had noticed were running low on over the day.
He finally returned to the shop an hour later, thankfully not distracted by anything, which meant more time to spend with Mei!
“MK, I got one last order for ya.”
Or more time to deliver another order. MK groaned and turned to Pigsy to take the bag before checking the app. Halfway across the city. Twenty minutes tops. Plenty of time to hang with Mei after.
“Kay! I’ll be back soon!” he said as he dashed out the door and to the tuk-tuk. He got settled and drove off, making his way through the streets, taking a shortcut here, jumping over some garbage there. Made it in less than ten minutes.
MK knocked on the door of the apartment. “Pigsy’s Noodles!”
The door opened to a yellow rabbit demon in a green-gray banbi. “Oh. Thank you.” The demon took the bag and studied him for a moment. “You look… stressed. My partner and I were just about to make tea. Would you care to join us?”
“Oh, uh, I would but-”
“We’ll only take a minute of your time. We’re big fans of yours, Monkie Kid,” they said with a smile. “It would be an honor to talk with you.”
“I mean I can’t turn down fans,” MK said as he made up his mind and walked in. The rabbit shut the door behind him. “Nice place you got here.”
“Thank you. Ān Jīng did most of the decorating.”
“Ān who now?”
“Ah, how inconsiderate of me! I know your name yet you don’t know ours. I am Mǐn Líng. My partner is Ān Jīng. Xe is in xis study. Xe’s writing a book, you know. Xe needs brain food to keep up the thoughts.” They chuckled as they walked into the narrow hall and knocked on a door. “Jīng, we have a guest. Come out and meet him.”
“One moment,” a quiet voice came through the other side. Mǐn Líng sighed and turned back to MK.
“I apologize. Xe will be thrilled to see you.” The rabbit walked out of the hall and sat on one of the couches. “Please, take a seat.” They set the bag on the coffee table in front of them.
MK sat on the other couch as a door opened and closed. A rat demon walked out, wearing a gray and pale pink ru and black shanku. Xer ears perked up as soon as xe saw him and xe turned to Mǐn Líng.
“You didn’t tell me it was the Monkie Kid,” xe mumbled. They shrugged and xe sighed. The rat disappeared into the kitchen and soon, sounds of shifting dishes could be heard.
“Your name was MK, correct? It’s quite the coincidence that it could also stand for ‘Monkie Kid,’” Mǐn Líng mused with a smile.
“I never actually thought about that before,” MK said, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s kinda cool! Y’know, MK isn’t even my real name.”
“No matter. I’m sure whatever it is, there’s a reason you left it behind.” Ān Jīng returned with three mugs of tea. Xe gave one to Mǐn Líng and one to MK before carefully sitting and taking the last mug from xis tail.
“Oh! Thank you!”
“We do not wish to be bad hosts. It’s the least we can do for one of such great renown.”
“I-I wouldn’t say ‘ great renown’- more like, ‘just a noodle delivery boy who somehow ended up with the powers of the monkey king and almost destroyed the world- uh, city- more than once’, heh.”
“But you are so much more than ‘just a noodle delivery boy.’ You’re MK the Monkie Kid! Successor of Sun Wukong, ally of the Demon Bull Family and the Third Lotus Prince, defeater of the Lady Bone Demon, and savior of the city three times over!” Mǐn Líng sat their tea on the table to pull out their phone. They struggled with unlocking it for a moment before letting Ān Jīng do it. “Not having paw pads definitely makes using technology harder,” they said sheepishly.
“‘Noodle boy turned hero saves city from Demon Bull King.’ ‘Monkie Kid defeats Spider Queen, saving city once more.’ ‘Monkie Kid returns after defeating Lady Bone Demon, saving the city yet again.’” MK looked at his tea as Ān Jīng read out the news headlines from the previous year. “We haven’t heard anything about the cracks in the sky, though. I’ll caution a guess that those are something you don’t want to talk about?”
“Yeah, you could say that. I-I don’t know why I’m telling this to two total strangers but… I saw some… really bad stuff while I was dealing with those. I almost did something I would’ve regretted for lifetimes. I-” He sighed. “Everything was my fault. I bring chaos wherever I go.” He missed the look the two demons shared.
“Because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, the Demon Bull King almost took over. Because of my hair, the Spider Queen got super powerful and also destroyed half of the city. And I practically swung the key around for everyone to see, screaming ‘Come and get it!' and gave it away which freed the stupid Lady Bone Demon! I trusted Azure, who killed the Jade Emperor and tried to take his power but failed, and the world almost ended because I couldn’t give myself up to the pillar!” MK stiffened at the hand on his shoulder. When had he started crying?
“That… Is a lot that you would try to find blame in yourself for. I’m sure none of it was truly your fault.” Mǐn Líng’s hand moved from his shoulder to his chin and lifted it so he was looking at them. “We are running low on time, and Ān Jīng really must get back to work. I suggest you finish your tea. We can talk another time, if that is what you wish.” There was something in their eyes, but MK couldn’t tell what it was. He just sighed, rubbed his eyes, and nodded.
The tea definitely made him feel better. The warmth was like a hug for his stomach that spread to the rest of his body as he drank. It was quiet as they all finished their tea. MK sat his mug down once he drank the last drops.
“I really gotta go now. Pigsy’s probably gonna yell at me,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Of course.” Ān Jīng stood and picked up his cup, heading to the kitchen. MK walked towards the door.
“Oh, and MK.”
“Yeah?” MK turned his head to look at the rabbit.
Mǐn Líng was standing too, holding an oddly familiar object. “I apologize.”
