Dell Clawthorne is a minor character of The Owl House. He is the husband of Gwendolyn Clawthorne, the father of Lilith and Eda Clawthorne, and the adoptive grandfather of King Clawthorne.
Appearance[]
Body[]
In his youth, Dell was tall, with a fair complexion, golden eyes, a sloped nose, pointed ears, thick, black eyebrows, scruffy orange hair worn in a ponytail, and a fluffy orange beard and mustache. He seemed to be often smiling. He was left with a facial scar and a missing left eye after the events of Eda's memory sequence in "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door".
In the present, he appears to be frailer compared to his younger years, having a hunched back and now walking with a staff. His skin is paler, the left side of his face and his left hand are covered in scars, and his left eye is permanently closed. His hair and beard have turned white from age and have grown longer.
Clothing[]
In Eda's memory, he wears a tattered dark teal jacket with a hood, teardrop-shaped silver clasp, lighter cuffs, and two gray patches stitched on the left arm and on the front, with a dark gray-and-black shirt underneath, a brown strap around his left shoulder and waist, dark brown pants, and warm gray shoes with darker cuffs, toes, and soles.
In the present, he wears a dark-colored robe, brown boots, and brown fingerless gloves. He no longer ties up his hair but does tie up his beard. In the epilogue to "Watching and Dreaming", he wears a monocle.
Personality[]
Dell comes off as cheerful and kind, yet a bit showy, as he wanted to throw a party before he goes to the Mandible. He is a loving father, as even after being injured by Eda, he still spent years trying to reach out to her, despite several unsuccessful attempts.
Dell is also a forgiving person, as seen when he asks Eda to not blame herself for accidentally injuring him, and instead tells her to let the past stay in the past.
Background[]
Dell hails from the Clawthorne clan, a family of witches famous for carving palismen, and he was noted for being one of the best carvers of the family. At one point, he married a woman named Gwen and had two daughters with her, Lilith and Edalyn. He was also responsible for helping Eda carve Owlbert.
Getting injured[]
During Eda's adolescence, Dell was about to leave for the Mandible for an extended period of time. Before leaving, he wanted to "leave in style" and set off a party popper for dramatic effect. However, the fireworks from the party popper unintentionally triggered Eda's transformation into the Owl Beast, and in the ensuing tussle with the beast, Dell lost his left eye, and his left hand sustained injuries that never fully healed.[1]
Due to his injuries, Dell is no longer able to carve palismen; instead, he started to work with the Bat Queen to preserve palistrom trees and her forests.[2]
Making amends[]
Due to the injuries inflicted by the Owl Beast, Eda was initially hesitant to see her father.
One day, Dell comes to the Owl House to celebrate Lilith becoming curator of the Supernatural History Museum, desiring for Eda to talk to him. His younger daughter evades him until running into him after escaping through the back door. As Eda struggles with what to say, blaming herself for ending his palisman-carving career, Dell brushes it aside and easily forgives her. He gives her a palistrom seed and tells her that it's okay to move on. Dell currently lives with his wife, Gwendolyn, and appears to have a great relationship with his family in general.[2]
Post Day of Unity[]
After the Day of Unity, Dell- along with Gwen- are turned into puppets by the Collector. A few months after the Day of Unity, he, Gwen, and Lilith are used by the Collector to torment his younger daughter. Dell, along with his wife and oldest daughter, are returned to normal after Belos is defeated.
Epilogue[]
Four years after Belos is defeated, Dell continues to help the Bat Queen replant palistrom and has taken Hunter on as an apprentice. He and his family attend Luz's belated quinceañera.
