"Eclipse Lake" is the ninth episode of the second season of The Owl House, and the twenty-eighth episode overall.
It premiered on August 7, 2021.
Synopsis
When Luz gets sick with the Common Mold, it's up to Amity, King, and Eda to find an important ingredient for the portal door—but they're not the only ones on its trail.[2]
Plot
At the Emperor's Castle, Emperor Belos has successfully rebuilt the portal and fabricated a new key. As he inserts it, however, it gets destroyed by the door, as it is missing an ingredient. From outside the room, Hunter is watching from the shadows; until his palisman appears, whom he tells to keep quiet. Belos hears this and calls him out, prompting him to hide his palisman. After Belos voices his struggles, Hunter asks him about the Human Realm. Belos then reveals that he once went to the Human Realm, musing about how peaceful it is compared to the Boiling Isles, and says that he looks forward to seeing it again. Belos then asks why Hunter was spying on him, prompting him to ask why he was swapped out with Kikimora as leader of an expedition to the Knee the next day. Belos explains that everyone has a use, reminding Hunter of the plans the Titan has for him, and that it would be a hassle to "replace" him. Hunter asks if this is punishment for failing his last assignment, but Belos avoids the topic, instead wishing him goodnight and telling him to stay in the castle for his own "safety". Hunter, unsatisfied with that answer, runs off.
The next day, Amity, Willow, Gus, King, and Hooty are busy doubling up security around the Owl House. Amity is going around doing checks and making sure everyone is carrying out their specific tasks. Hooty is securing the perimeter, Willow has gathered supplies, and Gus and King have gathered a lot of human CDs and tapes. Even Amity's new palisman, Ghost, wants to help out, bringing her a spider. The only one who isn't helping is Eda, who is supposed to be helping Hooty build their defenses; she is trying to figure out how to transform into her harpy form on command, using thirty-year-old anime-style movies that she thinks are human workout videos.

Amity then leads Eda to Luz's room, where it is revealed that she is sick with the Common Mold, hence why the group has been strengthening security. While the illness is harmless for witches, Amity is worried because Luz is human, so there is no telling how it might affect her. As a result, Luz has become delirious, wearing socks on her hands, thinking her arms are snakes, and almost eating the portal key, thinking she will return to the Human Realm by doing so. Amity takes the key away and decides to keep it on her until her girlfriend gets better. Luz then texts Amity through a game device they each have, but she doesn't understand it, only pretending to not upset her. Willow mentions how different it is now that Amity has been hanging around the Owl House more often, and Amity mentions that she was raised to view everything as an opportunity, and since Luz is sick, she is taking this as an opportunity to prove she is an awesome girlfriend.
At that moment, the echo mouse reveals another entry from Philip Wittebane; the entry includes information on how he found the rare substance known as Titan's Blood, which creates breaches into other realms. As the Titan's veins run through the land, many believe these wild portals are created when a little of its blood leaks into the water, which explains how he arrived on the Isles. He then set out on a journey back to a location known as Eclipse Lake. Frustrated, Luz hurries and writes everything down, and almost storms out the door to find Eclipse Lake, only to be stopped by her friends, as she is too unwell for an expedition. In her place, Eda and King go to Eclipse Lake for her instead accompanied by a volunteering Amity, while Willow and Gus stay behind to look after Luz.
Meanwhile, at the Knee, Kikimora, along with her contingent of the Emperor's Coven, are already performing their search for the Titan's Blood by digging through abandoned mine tunnels. Kikimora is taking this assignment very personally, seeing it as a chance to prove herself to the Emperor, but feeling very paranoid that Hunter will show up and spoil everything. Hunter is indeed there, disguised as a Coven Scout, and hides nearby with his palisman. He starts planning to get to the Titan's Blood before her in the hopes his efforts will please Belos and allow him to return to his old duties. Kikimora hears Hunter talking to his palisman and has her Abomaton fire at where he is hiding, prompting him to find another way into the tunnels.
Hunter spots Amity, King, and Eda
As he recovers from the blast, Hunter spots Amity, Eda, and King, who have begun their expedition for the Titan's Blood. He decides to follow them in the hopes that they will lead him to the blood, but his palisman suddenly drags him by his hair, causing him to lose his balance and fall forward, exposing his whereabouts to Amity, Eda, and King. Amity intends to subdue him, thinking he is a Coven Scout, but Hunter surrenders before she can do that. Eda recognizes his voice, and Amity restrains him before he can escape. With Hunter in tow, Eda, King, and Amity find another way into the mine tunnels, by busting through a wall of ice. Once inside, Eda tells King to fire some nearby mining equipment at her in the belief of activating her harpy form in self-defense. Hunter tries to warn them, but he is too late, as the projectile bounces all over the room, eventually nullified by Amity's magic. Hunter then warns them not to use any magic in the tunnels because the walls are made from the veins of the Titan, and as such, any magic they shoot will bounce right back at them. King then tries to use his new powers to echolocate a way through the mines, but it doesn't work.
After trekking through the mine shafts for a while, they make it to the passage leading to Eclipse Lake, only to discover Kikimora and her troops are blocking the way. Eda and King go off to create a distraction while Amity and Hunter hide. Amity then receives another text from Luz, but once again can't understand it. Hunter looks at the message and interprets it as a message telling Amity not to fail or they're over. She says that Luz would never say something like that, declaring herself an awesome girlfriend, but Hunter asks if Luz has said that. Hunter then notes that he and Amity have a lot in common; both of them have a lot to prove for themselves and cannot afford to fail, because there is nothing worse than disappointing the people close to them. Instead of waiting for Eda and King's distraction, Amity sets off a series of fireballs, distracting Kikimora and her troops long enough for Amity and her comrades to enter the mine shaft, during which, Amity drops her device.
Meanwhile, back at the Owl House, Luz accidentally activates another diary entry on the echo mouse, which reveals more information about Philip Wittebane's search for Eclipse Lake. He was successful in finding it, but it was not without consequences. The tunnels were filled with a substance known as "Fool's Blood", which signifies a decaying vein. Philip made it out alive, but his companions were not so lucky. Realizing Eda, King, and Amity are heading for danger, she tries to get to a crystal ball to warn them. Because of her illness, she is unable to see clearly and ends up knocking over and breaking it instead. She calls out to Willow, Gus, and Hooty for help, but they are too busy mixing audio sounds to notice her. Luz texts Amity through her device but is unaware that she has dropped hers.
Kikimora finds Amity
In the mine tunnels, Kikimora is convinced that Hunter is responsible for the attack and orders her guards to find him. She then discovers Amity's device, causing her to realize what tunnel they took. Meanwhile, Eda, King, Amity, and Hunter make it to where the Fool's Blood is located. Eda and King think it is the Titan's Blood and go to mine it. When Hunter warns them not to touch it, they ignore him, causing the ground beneath their feet to collapse, and Eda and King fall into a bottomless pit. Worst of all, Kikimora is coming. Not wanting to get caught, Hunter pleads for Amity to free him, which she reluctantly does. The moment he is free, Hunter knocks her down and heads for Eclipse Lake on a mine cart, just as Kikimora and her troops arrive and capture Amity.
Kikimora is ecstatic when Amity tells her what just happened, as now she can finally have her revenge on Hunter, having to be reminded of Titan's Blood by her captain. Her two Abomatons transform into minecarts, and she and her soldiers then go after Hunter, while the captain throws Amity down the pit. However, she is saved by Eda and King, who have jammed Owlbert between the walls to keep them from falling. However, Owlbert is knocked out and cannot fly them out. During her fall, Amity catches the device, which was also thrown down with her. Their only option is for Eda to transform into her harpy form, as the guards took Amity's staff, but Eda is still unable to do it on command. She has tried everything from yelling to scaring it out. Things become desperate as their combined weight causes Owlbert to start breaking. King suggests talking to the Owl Beast; Eda is uncertain if it will work, but she gives it a try. After consulting with it, and reluctantly forming a deal with the Owl Beast within her, she finally transforms into her harpy form and flies them out of the pit. They go after Kikimora and her troops, only to discover they have crashed while riding through the mines. After Amity retrieves her palisman, they find the tunnel leading to Eclipse Lake, but they are suddenly attacked by the scout captain and her abomaton. Eda holds them off while Amity and King head for Eclipse Lake.
Upon arrival, however, Amity and King discover Eclipse Lake has been drained, and there is not a single drop of Titan's Blood anywhere. They find Hunter desperately digging through the soil, prompting Amity to ask what he's doing. He explains that Belos needs Titan's Blood to make a new portal key, making Amity realize the portal key contains Titan's Blood. Hunter further explains that he cannot go back empty-handed, so now he's digging his own grave. Amity now feels like she has failed Luz as well. She tells King that she is unable to understand the symbols Luz has been sending her, thinking that they mean Luz will break up with her if she fails. However, with King's help, she realizes the symbols Luz has been sending spell words, and are words of encouragement and warnings. Amity is relieved that Luz still loves her and will not be disappointed if she fails.
Hunter fights to get the key.
Amity walks up to Hunter, who is lying face down in the dirt, and tells him that he was right about them having so much in common. She grew up thinking everything was an opportunity to justify existing. But now, she has seen there are people out there who will not make oneself feel worthless, and all he has to do is let himself meet them. Amity stretches her hand out to Hunter, but when he sees the key around her neck, he jumps at it. The two of them engage in a relentless witches' duel for the key, with King helping Amity and Hunter's palisman providing him with magic, but they soon reach a standstill. Hunter then admits that Amity might win if they continue, but warns her that the Emperor's Coven knows where they live, threatening to harm Luz if Amity does not surrender the key. Defeated, she then cracks the key in her hand but reluctantly hands it over. Hunter then says he genuinely appreciates her helping him, before halfheartedly flying off on his palisman. Eda then arrives, having defeated the last of the Emperor's Coven members, only to be disappointed that she missed the fight.
Luz calls Amity "an awesome girlfriend."
Back at the Owl House, Luz has fallen asleep and has since recovered from her illness. She is briefly distracted by the mushrooms growing on her head, but suddenly remembers the others might be in trouble. She rushes downstairs to find that Eda is stuck in the door, unable to transform back. King also reveals the reason they're late is because Eda ate nine voles on the way home, which was part of her deal with the Owl Beast. Luz hugs Amity, saying she is so happy to see her awesome girlfriend safe, and Amity says that she feels the same way. King gets jealous that Luz isn't hugging him, but he squeaks in protest when she does moments later. Eda is worried about telling Luz they had failed, but Amity thinks otherwise, showing that when she crushed the key, the Titan's Blood leaked into her hand and stained her glove, meaning that their mission was a success. Meanwhile, Hunter is not happy that the blood in the key has leaked out, but his palisman helps cheer him up, and he starts to be able to understand what it's saying.

Revelations and significant events
- Several details about Emperor Belos are revealed.
- His face is revealed, and he has a large basil-green scar/section of his face, which has holes that seem to be eroding it.
- Judging by a book he left open, he has been collecting items for something called a "grimwalker".
- He reveals to Hunter that he once visited the Human Realm.
- He has pointed ears like a witch’s, but they are significantly smaller than other witches’ ears.
- It is revealed that Hunter has an obsession with being useful to Belos and believes this to be the purpose of his existence. When Hunter feels he has failed again, he has a mental breakdown and suffers a lapse in judgment.

- Lofi Girl - One of the songs Gus and King bring is a mixtape titled "Lo-fi beats to study and relax to", a reference to an ongoing and famous livestream which plays Lofi genre music.
- Dragon Ball Z - The film Dragonclaw Z is a reference to the anime television series. Eda also mimics the power-boosting technique used by the characters in the series. Additionally, the character on the cover of the video resembles Vegeta, a major character in the Dragon Ball series.
- Tamagotchi - The devices Luz and Amity use to communicate with each other resemble the handheld digital toy.
- Avatar: The Last Airbender - The technique Amity uses of keeping a bottle of abomination goop on her waist is similar to Katara's method of keeping a satchel of water on her waist. It is worth noting that Amity and Katara share the same voice actress: Mae Whitman.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion - One of Luz's plushies closely resembles Sachiel.
- YuYu Hakusho - One of Luz's plushies closely resembles Puu.
- Pyrite - The existence of Fool's Blood in relation to Titan's Blood is a reference to the mineral pyrite, which is also known as "fool's gold" due to its similar color to real gold.
Errors
- When Luz tries to leap out of her room only to get caught by Eda, Gus is pushed out of the door. However, in the next shot, Willow is the only one out in the hallway and Gus next speaks from inside the room.
- When Eda smashes the Fool’s Blood with her staff, for a split second, when she laughs, she is not wearing her gloves.
- When Luz hugs King and dances around, she is supposed to get closer to the camera as she goes. However, she stays in the same spot during her first twirl, causing it to look like she suddenly gets bigger.
- When Eda asks "Is this Titan's Blood?", the subtitles incorrectly label King as the one saying the line.
- The subtitles for Philip's diary entry about Fool's Blood incorrectly write "decaying rain" instead of "decaying vein".
- The subtitles misinterpret Hunter's line "Real staffs are weird." as "The staffs are weird."
