"Enchanting Grom Fright" is the sixteenth episode of the first season of The Owl House, and the sixteenth episode overall.
It premiered on August 8, 2020.
Synopsis
Luz experiences Grom, Hexside's version of Prom, and it's not what she expects.
Plot
At the Owl House, Luz is perfecting the Plant Glyph after learning it while King watches cat videos on her phone. She freezes up when she sees her mother texting her, asking her about camp, and nervously texts back with a wordless thumbs up. Luz explains to King how poorly her mother might react to her ditching camp to stay in the Demon Realm for the summer, in addition to the existence of magic in general, but King convinces her that not telling her mom is the safer option. Willow and Gus soon arrive, and the kids head to school.
At Hexside, Luz hears about an upcoming event known as Grom, with Amity being chosen as this year's “Grom Queen”. Luz is happy for her at first, assuming Grom to be equivalent to human prom. However, Amity explains that "Grom" actually refers to Grometheus the Fear Bringer, a monster that has the ability to transform into a person's worst fears and lives below the school, which a chosen student must fight every year. As Grom Queen, Amity must battle Grometheus, and thus let her worst fear be revealed to everyone at school. Luz, wanting to help Amity, decides to take her place as Grom Queen.
At the Owl House, Amity has Edric and Emira conjure illusions of the fears Luz has written down while training her. Although most of her fears aren't as big of a deal, such as cats with human faces and Eda treating her weakly, Luz still shows she is afraid. Nonetheless, since they are literally out of time as Grom is about to start, Luz pushes forward on facing Grometheus.
Everyone gathers at Hexside where Grom is taking place. Despite the pressure, Amity confides in Luz to give it her best try. Soon, Luz faces Grom, easily defeating many of Grom's transformations at first. But while she fights the Grom, she realizes that her worst fear was actually something she was not expecting: her mother finding out about the Boiling Isles. The Grom, while partially transformed into her mother, chases her out to a cliff with Eda and Amity following them. When Amity tries to stop the monster, it reveals that she wanted to go to Grom with someone but being rejected by them was her biggest fear. Luz ends up offering to attend Grom with her as her friend and together, they dance and defeat the Grom by using Amity's abomination and Luz's plant glyph. King also overcomes his fear of public speaking with Gus' help and the three of them are carried back by the cheering crowd of students. Luz asks Amity who she wanted to invite to the Grom but Amity tells her that it's not important, but then it is revealed that Amity wanted to invite Luz and that she likes her.
Once the party's over, Luz goes back to the Owl House and texts her real mother, saying that she has been having a good time at "camp". Unbeknownst to her, someone has been sending fake letters to Camila in her handwriting.
