Synopsis

When Amity's parents get Luz, Willow and Gus expelled from Hexside, Luz strikes a dangerous deal with them to get back into school.[1]

Plot

Late one night, Alador and Odalia Blight are giving one of their presentations to potential investors at their company, Blight Industries, with Emira and Edric acting as the bouncers. Odalia introduces them to their latest invention, the Abomaton, alongside their daughter Amity, who isn't thrilled to be a part of this. This creature is capable of pouring tea, giving people makeovers, and protecting them from "unwanted visitors". Odalia sends Amity a reminder, also calling her "Mittens", via their magically connected necklaces, to make the Abomaton look good, and they'll forget her recent "lackluster performance" at Hexside. Amity pretends to put up a fight with the Abomaton (which Alador also isn't interested in), but when it is about to step on her copy of the group photo at Grom, she destroys it without hesitation, causing all potential investors to leave. Odalia is furious with Amity, and asks what's wrong with her, but she notices Amity looking at the photo and realizes that Amity has gotten "distracted".

The next day, Luz is teaching Eda and Lilith about glyph magic. Luz explains that she hasn't encountered any new glyphs besides the four she already has, but reveals that she has learned to combine different glyphs in order to do different things. Lilith follows Luz's instructions precisely by drawing the glyphs, but Eda, impatient to get her powers back, carves on her desk and tries experimenting with different glyph combos instead of learning the basics first, which results in her glyph blowing up. Hooty then interrupts the lesson and drags Luz to school, leaving the two sisters to study under King's supervision. Glad that Luz is no longer there to teach her, Eda almost immediately wants to continue with her glyph experimentation, but Lilith reminds her to stick to the rules. Eda ignores this and goes off to do her own thing, prompting Lilith to send King after her, much to his annoyance.

Luz arrives at school, where she is greeted by her friends, Willow and Gus, the latter Luz is surprised to see has gone through "witch puberty" since the last time she saw him. Amity also greets her with a homemade fairy pie, filled with live fairies, which Luz finds revolting, but accepts nonetheless. Just then, they hear an argument with Principal Bump and Odalia, who calls Luz, Willow, Gus, and especially Amity to Principal Bump's office, where they meet Amity's parents. Odalia mentions a few incidents that occurred at Hexside from previous episodes, which have endangered the students, including Amity. The Blight parents force Bump to expel them. Amity is furious at this, but Odalia sends her a mental message telling her this is her fault for not upholding her end of their deal, while Bump doesn't have a a choice. Luz tries to get Amity to stand up for them, but Amity remains quiet. The trio is then forcibly expelled from the school by the guards, and Amity is forced to take double the amount of classes as punishment for what happened.

While Gus and Willow are deeply upset, Luz refuses to accept their expulsion, and confronts Odalia outside the school. Odalia tells her it isn't personal, and that they are simply trying to teach Amity a lesson in business. Luz doesn't buy this excuse and points out that she can't stop Amity from being friends with them outside of Hexside. Odalia then gives Luz a business card and offers to stop by, in order to "come to an agreement", but Luz is still angry. Willow and Gus force her to drop this, and they encourage Luz to try and get back into Hexside on their own.

Back at the Owl House, Eda tries to make a pyramid with glyph cards, to prove herself the superior witch, and activates them, only for her attempt to fail again. Eda is stumped as casting spells with circles depends on the phlegm of the bile sacs, but King points out that glyphs are symbols of the Isles and suggests there must be a different way to combine them. Hearing Hooty outside, Eda sees that Lilith is doing better with her glyphs, like making a crown of ice for Hooty, and ice popsicles, and even an ice sculpture. Jealous of her sister's bigger success, and ignoring King telling her she should have listened to Luz, Eda decides to continue drawing.

Noticing Banned posters of themselves on the school door (with Luz getting her second poster since her previous ban), the three of them try everything to get Bump to change his mind, from sending him gifts, to sneaking in disguised as teachers, and trying to fly in on Owlbert. But because of how rich and powerful the Blight family is, Bump cannot let them back in, even though it is clear he misses them through each of their failed attempts.

Eventually, Willow and Gus' parents find out about them being expelled, and very disappointed, they are dragged home by messenger crows, and unreasonably grounded for one to three years, even though the expulsion was forced onto them. Luz then bumps into Amity outside Hexside, who apologizes to her for not sticking up for them. Luz knows that Amity is too afraid of her mom, so she asks her to take her to Odalia so they can talk this out, but Amity doesn't have the courage to stand up to her mother, and leaves Luz alone. She then finds the business card Odalia gave her and looks on the back.

Eda shows King a poorly drawn combination of the glyphs she calls a "Super Glyph", which he isn't impressed by. She manages to make an ice cube, which quickly enlarges into a spiky ball, and enlarges further. Eda starts to realize the huge mistake she's made.

Luz heads to Blight Manor to talk with the Blights. She arrives and is greeted by the family's abomination butler, who Luz morphs to try and make its face look like a cat. Luz finds Odalia and Alador in the basement preparing for their latest presentation. Because Amity is too busy with her school work now, Luz agrees to help Odalia with the product, on the condition that she and her friends are let back into Hexside, but soon regrets it when she discovers the presentation is on abomination-based weapons.

After returning home, Amity, who is ready for the presentation, finds out her mother has taken Luz to Blight Industries to demonstrate their abomination products. Willow, meanwhile, is dealing with her disappointed parents, who have grounded her and quit their jobs to homeschool her. However, Gus and Amity tell her about Luz, and she sneaks out with the support of one of her dads, Gilbert. They arrive at Blight Industries, and argue about how they are going to sneak in, only to have Edric and Emira give them cloaks to hide amongst the cloaked investors. Amity is surprised her older siblings are helping, but they don't want her to tell Odalia. Edric then tries to put "Hex me" stickers on their backs, as he did with the actual investors in the beginning, but Amity throws the stickers back at his face and gives him and Emira a watchful glare.

They soon find Luz on stage, being attacked by all types of abomination-based weapons. After she survives an abomination armed with a crossbow with an ice glyph, Odalia presents the last product for the evening; a huge, armored, upgraded Abomaton, the Abomaton 2.0. Realizing Luz is going to be killed, Amity hurries to her rescue, while Willow and Gus are apprehended by security. Luz asks Odalia to stop the presentation, as she has made it look good. However, Odalia refuses, as it hasn't eliminated its enemy yet. While Luz does her best to fight off the Abomaton with glyphs, it manages to overpower her. But just before it can finish Luz off, Amity uses her powers to protect her and yells that she won't let the Abomaton harm "her Luz", which takes Luz by surprise.

Back with Eda, she is still having problems with the spiky ball, which absorbs King. Lillith tries to get her attention, so Eda has no choice but to accept her help and follow the rules.

Amity continues to hold down the Abomaton 2.0, ignoring her mother's orders and crushing her necklace in her hand. She asks Luz if she's okay, to which Luz blushes and confirms. For the first time in her life, an angered Amity stands up to her parents and tells them that her friends inspire her to think about the kind of person she wants to be. Luz and Amity then team up back to back, momentarily blushing at being so close to each other. Seeing that they're losing investors, Odalia asks Amity what she wants. Amity then threatens to destroy the Abomaton in front of her investors unless she lets her friends back into Hexside, which Luz realizes is merely a bluff. Outraged by this, Odalia reluctantly agrees, and Amity and Luz pretend to get knocked out when the Abomaton strikes them with a giant, hollow hammer, allowing the presentation to conclude. This leaves the investors impressed, and the Blights reach their goal. Odalia attempts to go back on her deal with Amity, but Alador tells her she has no choice, as a Blight always upholds their end of the deal. Alador then advises her to let it be and points out that Amity is getting stronger in her magic, strong enough to someday become a coven head, which appeases her for now.

Eda asks Lilith how she figured out how to defeat the creature. Lilith explains that the glyphs are like words that command magic around them, instead of containing it like witches do. Overlapping them like Eda did was like screaming different words at the same time, so the spell got confused, which is how they destroyed the ice ball. Eda figures out that if they combine the glyphs in a specific way, they can cast any spell they want. This causes King, who has caught a cold, to conclude that the reason Luz hasn't found any more glyphs is because she has already found them all, so Eda suggests they should start learning new combinations. When Luz returns home, the sisters try to tell her their findings, but Luz explains she's exhausted and beaten up, and it'll have to wait until tomorrow. Lilith then asks for extra credit for making an ice sculpture of her and Luz, to which Eda makes an ice cube out of jealousy, which earns them both extra credit, but Luz only allows this since she's still tired.

Back at Blight Industries, Alador and Odalia revel in their success, despite the "spectacle". However, they are visited by the Golden Guard, who announces that none of their investors will get their Abomatons, as Emperor Belos has decided to purchase their entire stock for himself since he doesn't like citizens having their own private armies.

Production notes

Allusions

  • Spider-Man - When King goes to talk to Eda he mutters "No one ever said power comes with responsibility". This is a reference to Uncle Ben's famous quote, "With great power comes great responsibility".
  • Pieter Bruegel the Elder - The address on Blight Industries' business card, 811 Bruegel Blvd, is named after Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a famous Dutch Renaissance and Flemish painter along with Hieronymus Bosch, a big inspiration for Dana Terrace when developing the series.
  • Beauty and the Beast - The cup and teapot the abomination butler carries resemble Mrs. Potts and Chip.
  • Amphibia - In one of Willow's books, "The Lifecycle of the Common Swamp Toad", the titular toad resembles Hopediah "Hop Pop" Plantar.
    • Ironically, Hop Pop is a frog, not a toad.
  • Looney Tunes - Gus suggests making an illusion of female guards, but Willow dismisses this, saying "this isn't a cartoon from the '40s". This is most likely a reference to Bugs Bunny often dressing in drag to fool his enemies such as Yosemite Sam.

Errors

  • During the scene where Luz, Willow and Gus are in Principal Bump's office, for a few frames near Odalia's leg, there are stray lines.
  • For a few frames after Amity asks the abomination butler if anyone came to the house, her hair is one solid color.
Escaping Expulsion - 180

In the top left picture, Willow's uniform is green instead of orchid.

  • While Principal Bump is looking at the photos, one photo shows Luz disguising herself as an Abomination, in that photo, Willow was in her Plant Track Uniform instead of the Abomination Track Uniform like she originally was.
