The everlasting oath is a spell that binds two individuals to an agreement, forcing the individuals in question to follow through on their word.
Overview[]
The terms of an everlasting oath are negotiated between two parties prior to its casting, involving conditions for both parties, such as engaging in a competitive match, and a magically-enforced punishment (typically in favor of the opposite party) for if they lose or fail to follow through, such as being prohibited from preforming a certain action from then on. Once agreed upon, these terms are to be asserted verbally, and the spell is cast by means of a spell circle around the clasped hands of each individual, and cast by one of the two parties. The individual responsible for binding the oath is also capable of removing it, which can be done with a second spell circle in a similar manner.[1]
If an individual loses in some manner, or if other sanctions of the oath are breached, the losing party's punishment will go into effect, presumably causing magical intervention if the individual tries to preform the action agreed upon as prohibited, although the exact semantics are somewhat ambiguous. If unbound, however, neither individual will face the oath's punishment.[2]
Background[]
During her visit to the Boiling Isles' annual covention, Luz Noceda, quoting the Good Witch Azura book series, challenges Amity Blight to a witches' duel. Luz states that, if she were to win, Amity must admit that humans can learn be witches, and apologize to King for crushing his cupcake. Amity decides that if she wins, Luz must tell everyone present that she is not a witch and must stop learning magic. Luz agrees, and Amity binds them both to their word with the oath.
After both girls' mentors cheated during their match, Amity berates Luz for humiliating her in front of everyone and forces her to tell her she is not a witch. Luz says so, but says she is trying hard to be one. After being shown the light glyph, Amity unbinds Luz from the oath. Luz questions if it truly worked and if she will still be able to learn magic, causing Amity to respond that Luz never had any innate magical ability.
Trivia[]
- The everlasting oath may be inspired by the unbreakable vow from the Harry Potter series.
