"For the Future" is the second episode of the third season of The Owl House, and the forty-second episode overall, serving as the penultimate episode of the series.

It premiered on January 21, 2023.[1]

Synopsis[]

Luz and her friends race against Belos to confront the Collector and save the Boiling Isles.[1]

Plot[]

Shortly after forcing Luz, Amity, Gus, Willow, and Hunter into the portal before it explodes, King is brought before The Collector to explain the rules to "Owl House". As King explains it is a game of pretend, Lilith and Hooty try to save him, but the Collector turns them into puppets and sends them to the Archive House, a floating house above and made of the Titan's skull. Eda and Raine watch the chaos before spotting King with the Collector; with Raine's approval, Eda turns into her harpy form and tries to save her son. Unfortunately, the curse starts to take effect and she is out of elixir. Soon, the Collector comes by and asks to play as the curse takes hold, with the Owl Beast fully taking over and lunging at him.

Months later, Luz wakes up in the In Between Realm. She sees someone who is trying to wave and say something to her, but Luz gets dragged out to the Demon Realm by Amity. Luz, her mom, and friends have returned to the Boiling Isles, and discover a lot has changed in their absence. The Isles have become all childishly cute and colorful from the Collector's influence and now there even stands a magical floating castle hovering over the skull: The Archive House.

The kids have a lot on their minds; Hunter is still struggling with the loss of Flapjack and has been trying to take his mind off it by focusing on finding Belos, Amity and Gus are worried about their families, and so is Willow, though she is trying hard to put on a brave face and be strong for everyone else. Luz especially has a lot on her mind, remaining ashamed of all that has happened, and is determined to keep her promise to leave the Isles with her mother as soon as everyone is saved, much to Camila's concern. Furthermore, she is still unable to get her Palisman to hatch. While hiding out in the Owl House, Amity tells Luz about how she got Ghost; she would not move no matter what Amity thought of until she admitted not knowing what she wanted to be when she grew up. She wanted to choose the path for herself, and that was enough for Ghost to come to her. Luz wants to be a witch and help her friends, but to her doing one always seems to interfere with the other. All Amity can say is that she must be patient.

Later, they witness the Collector and King "playing" in the deserted streets of Bonesborough, discovering that most of the denizens have been turned into puppets and have become the Collector's playthings, among them one of Willow's dads. Also playing along is Terra Snapdragon, who is being forced to dress up as Eda. When Terra insults King while complaining about having to play along with the Collector's games, he turns her into a puppet, despite King's objections. The Collector decides to have Eda participate in his game, but King quickly reminds Eda is still cursed. With the promise of checking up on Eda made, they fly off back to the Archive House.

Shortly afterward, Luz and her friends bump into Mattholomule, Skara, and Barcus, who take them to Hexside, which is now a hideaway from the Collector's spies. After the Day of Unity, the Collector sent them to capture everyone. The Banshees fought them off as best they could, but all the teachers were turned into puppets, along with Amelia and Cat; the kids at Hexside are all that remained. Among the refugees are Edric and Emira, who managed to escape from their grounding to search for Amity. However, Edric ended up falling down a well while trying to escape from the Collector's spies and broke every bone in his body. The students of Hexside have also developed their own community over the last few months, and Luz and her friends learn that Boscha has made herself the leader, which nobody is happy about. Every time someone comes forward with a proposal to make things better for everyone, Boscha turns them down without giving it any thought, especially under the influence of her mysterious assistant, Miki. She even turns down Luz's request to help defeat the Collector and save everyone, forcing them to take matters into their own hands.

Meanwhile, Belos is limping through the woods to his old hideout. By now, his body is breaking down, and is no longer able to hold it together. He even finds himself haunted by visions of his brother, Caleb Wittebane, and previous grimwalkers looking at him disapprovingly. He makes it to his old hideout and finds one unfinished grimwalker. He absorbs the body and lays there to heal.

The Collector and King, meanwhile, return to the Archives, and are greeted by Odalia, who has become the Collector's "Mamadalia". After ordering her to take the Collector's puppets back to the archive, the two head to bed where King tries to reason with the Collector about not endangering people's lives with dangerous games. However, the Collector has no sympathy for how fragile a mortal's life is. He only cares about what he wants, and people are nothing more than something to own. After reading a bedtime story to the Collector, King heads to the cage where he is keeping Eda under guard by the Coven Heads, who, including Raine, have been turned into puppets. Lilith is also with her, and she is no longer a puppet. King has also found Hooty, who is still a puppet and brings him to Eda and Lilith.

Back at Hexside, Mattholomule helps sneak Luz and her friends into the magic photo classroom. They hope to extract a memory photo from Luz from when she witnessed Belos using the teleportation spell so that they can cast the same spell to reach the Archive House. After some digging, they find what they are looking for. Knowing that Hunter is a grimwalker and still upset about what happened to Flapjack, Willow gives him a picture of them together. She tells him that nobody cares what he is and that he is part of Luz's group now. However, instead of being happy, Hunter shows sadness over this. This makes Willow distraught, and she leaves to be alone. Gus reveals he's known Hunter was a grimwalker ever since the Day of Unity and was waiting for him to bring it up himself. Everyone is ambushed and knocked out by Boscha and her assistants, who turn out to be Kikimora and her Abomatron.

Meanwhile, Belos is barely healed but has enough strength to reach the Collector's castle and possess the Raine puppet. He sneaks into the Collector's room, but he is quickly restrained when the Collector wakes up by his presence. Belos convinces the Collector he was magically brought to life and has come to warn him that King is plotting against him. The Collector doesn't believe him at first, until he eavesdrops on King's conversation with Eda and Lilith, coming up with a plan to stop the Collector once and for all but failing to see that King wants to try talking them down instead of sealing them away again. Belos even tells the Collector that Luz has returned and is also plotting to destroy him.

Luz, Amity, Camila, and Mattholomule end up in the detention pit and are separated from Willow, Gus, and Hunter. Kikimora announces her plans to start her own empire with the students of Hexside, and most of all get revenge on Luz, who calls her out for reusing Belos' plans of ruling by fear instead of coming up with something original. She jumps into the pit riding her Abomatron, and attacks. The four of them battle against Kikimora with whatever spells they have, but Kikimora proves to be much stronger. Camila ends up botching an ice glyph, which causes her and Luz to get separated from Amity and Mattholomule in a cave-in. Once the Nocedas knock out Kikimora, they flee.

Amity and Mattholomule are ambushed by Boscha. She walks up to Amity, and surprisingly, gets down on her knees, asking her to come back to her. With her friends/teammates gone, she wants them to be a team again, and rule Hexside together like they used to. Disgusted, Amity turns her down and the two try to walk away. However, Boscha refuses to let her go, and soon a fight breaks out. Boscha is quickly beaten thanks to Mattholomule's illusions, and Amity tells her she cannot be the person she wants her to be. At the very least, they can save her teammates if she lets them try.

Luz and Camila escape the detention pit and retreat into the woods, Kikimora still on their tail. At this point, Luz believes she has messed up again and Camila confronts her daughter over not wanting to leave the Demon Realm because she believes she keeps messing up. Camila tells Luz that making mistakes is a part of life and admits to having her own fair share of mistakes in the past. As she lists a few, she confesses that her biggest mistake is turning her daughter into someone she's not, revealing her love of Cosmic Frontier in the process. Camila apologizes for being protective, and it is at this point that Luz realizes the only thing she ever really wanted: to be understood. In that moment, her palisman egg hatches, and forms into a staff.

Meanwhile, Willow, Gus, and Hunter find themselves in another part of the detention pit. Willow has begun to lose control of her magic and ends up trapping the boys in vines. She tries to assure herself she is in control, but she is not. Eventually, she breaks down into tears believing she's nothing more than a "half-a-witch." This causes Hunter to teleport forward and talk her down, letting out all the things he's been holding in ever since they came back. He and Gus then encourage Willow to open up about her problems, and she tearfully confesses to missing her fathers. The place begins to cave in, and Hunter uses his magic to save all three of them and escape the pit. They soon realize that Hunter has Flapjack's teleportation magic.

Willow, Gus, and Hunter are soon found by Luz and Camila, who are still being attacked by Kikimora, seeing Luz struggling to control her new staff. The kids put up a fight against Kikimora who reveals she was planning on double-crossing Boscha to gain control over Hexside just as Amity shows up with Boscha, Mattholomule, and the rest of the Hexside students. The students hold off Kikimora while Luz, her mother, and friends cast the teleportation spell that transports them to the skull. Upon arrival, Luz's palisman fully forms into a "snake shifter" she names Stringbean. The group happily celebrates the newly hatched palisman. Shortly after, Willow expresses gratitude towards Hunter for what he said back in the detention pit, telling him he means a lot to her too, intertwining her pinky with his, with Hunter tearing up in happiness. Luz expresses to Amity that she looks forward to showing her palisman to Eda and King. However, the Collector is observing them from above with Belos by his side. Convinced and manipulated by his words that Luz has come to defeat him, the Collector has decided it is time to play a new game.

Trivia[]

  • Viewership: This episode was watched by 0.440 million viewers on its premiere (0.295 million viewers on Disney Channel and 0.147 million viewers on Disney XD)[4]
  • The main characters' guesses as to what Luz's palisman would ultimately be are guesses that fans of the show speculated.
  • This is the first episode to not list TJ Hill in its credits sequence.
  • On January 5, 2023, the episode was accidentally released on iTunes Canada, but it was deleted from the site hours later.[7]
  • This episode was later uploaded to YouTube on January 22, 2023,[8] the day after its television premiere, making this the seventh episode (following "A Lying Witch and a Warden", "Separate Tides", "Eclipse Lake", "Labyrinth Runners", "King's Tide" and "Thanks to Them") to later be uploaded in full to YouTube.
  • While Arin Hanson reprises his role as the unnamed oracle student, Kimberly Brooks replaces him as the unnamed bat student in this episode.
  • This is the twelfth episode where Spanish is spoken.
    • "Qué belleza" (Translation: What beauty)
    • "¡Ay, que lindo!" (Translation: Oh, how cute!)
    • "¡Bruja!" (Translation: Witch)
    • "¡Pero mira que preciosos mis bebés! ¡Ven, ven!" (Translation: Oh, look at all of mama's precious babies. Come here, come here.)

  • This is Hooty's final speaking role in the series.

Revelations and significant events[]

  • The portal exploded shortly after the kids were sent through it, hence why the kids could not return through the door of the Old House.
  • The Collector has terraformed the Boiling Isles into a fantastical landscape and transformed a majority of the Boiling Isles' citizens into puppets.
    • Lilith was turned into a puppet, but at King's request The Collector changed her back.
  • A glowing figure resembling a Titan inhabits the In Between Realm, but Luz dismisses it as a hallucination.
  • Amity reveals to Luz that she struggled to bond with Ghost when she first received her, managing to do so by admitting she doesn't know what goal she wants for her future, merely wanting the power to choose her own path.
    • Ghost is revealed to be female.
  • Willow calls Gilbert "Dad" and Harvey "Papa".
  • Odalia has partnered with the Collector in the hopes of recreating the Boiling Isles in her ideas. However, she is treated like a servant and called "Mamadalia" by the Collector.
  • A small few have taken refuge at Hexside with Boscha and Kikimora, who was disguised as a St. Epiderm student named "Miki", acting as the leaders.
  • Boscha has been repressing her sadness over watching Amelia and Cat being turned into puppets, which made her susceptible to Kikimora's manipulation over her.
  • Amity has tried multiple times to get Bump to form a student council to no success.
  • Belos is having hallucinations of Caleb's and the previous Golden Guards' ghosts.
  • "Tholomule" is Mattholomule's surname, rather than part of his given name, meaning that his full name is actually "Matt Tholomule".
  • The Collector was a member of a race of cosmic beings, called collectively as "Collectors", who observe, collect, and preserve other life forms throughout different dimensions, but he went rogue because he found this boring.
    • According to The Collector's guidebook, Collectors annihilate the planets of beings who "meddle in their affairs" (i.e. resist being collected).
    • The Collector uses an altered version of the Collectors' guidebook to fall asleep.
    • The Titans were nearly driven to extinction by the Collectors due to Titan magic being able to cancel out their own magic.
  • King manages to trick The Collector into believing that Eda is still in her cursed form. In order to keep Eda's curse at bay, Lilith has been making elixirs.
  • Gus reveals to Hunter that he knows the latter was a grimwalker after looking into Belos' memories with the Magic amplifier.
  • Due to Flapjack's sacrifice, Hunter is now able to utilize the former's teleportation abilities.
  • Camila reveals some of her past mistakes included scheduling her wisdom tooth surgery the day before her and Manny's wedding, getting road rage, accidentally bad-mouthing Luz's new principal, and selling energy drinks for a pyramid scheme for three years.
    • Camila also reveals that she was convinced to move to Gravesfield so Manny could be closer to the nearby hospital, expressing some guilt over his death.
  • Belos possesses Raine and tells The Collector of King's "betrayal" and Luz's return.
  • Luz's deepest desire is to be understood.
  • Luz's palisman egg hatches into a "snake shifter" named Stringbean.

Continuity[]

  • The first scene takes place during the end of "King's Tide".
  • The Owl House is still damaged from the events of "O Titan, Where Art Thou".
  • Gus and Willow's story to Camila references Willow struggling with her Abomination homework, referencing her having been struggling in the Abomination Track for most of her debut episode, "I Was a Teenage Abomination", until being transferred to the Plant Track, as well as how Gus and Willow first met in the flashback from "Labyrinth Runners".
  • The cemetery's portal to the Demon Realm is located in the same place where Eda first discovered the Portal Door, as seen in "Keeping up A-fear-ances".
  • Camila says "¡Ay, que lindo!" when she first sees King, the same way Luz did in "A Lying Witch and a Warden".
    • Camila squeezes her eyes shut and cries as she rides a staff for the first time, the same way Luz did when she rode on the staff for the first time in "A Lying Witch and a Warden".
  • One of the rampaging kindergartners is seen wearing the Choosy Hat from "Wing It Like Witches", having presumably killed it.
  • One of the murals in the Archive House is a depiction of a Titan Trapper fighting the other Titan, as seen in "Echoes of the Past".
  • The memory tweezers from "Understanding Willow" return.
    • Luz and Willow reference this episode when they are about to fish out Luz's memories by saying "No schemes. No plots. No ruses. And definitely no shenanigans."
    • Willow's habit of not talking about her problems, as seen in the same episode, comes to a head here as it leads to her losing control of her magic.
  • When Hunter is spooked while guarding the Owl House, he reflexively tries to summon Flapjack, before remembering that he's dead and gets furious.
  • The pictures on the memory board are the same ones from "Understanding Willow" and depicted events from "Any Sport in a Storm".
  • Willow digs through Luz's memories to find the teleportation glyph from "Elsewhere and Elsewhen". Presumably due to Luz's guilt-ridden emotional state, Willow unearths events from previous episodes which Luz views as her "mistakes" in the process:
  • Gus references using the Amplifier on Belos in "King's Tide". He also has a photograph of the Wittebane statues, presumably taken when he saw the statues in "Thanks to Them".
  • Gus being aware of Hunter being a grimwalker is foreshadowed (seemingly intentionally on Gus' part) in "Thanks to Them" when Gus brings up that the Cosmic Frontier character Chief Engineer O'Bailey is hiding the fact that he is a clone, and that the character Captain Avery has already figured that out. The two later cosplay as these characters, in seemingly another attempt by Gus to let Hunter know that he knows he's a grimwalker, and that he's okay with it.
  • Luz uses Belos' teleportation glyph from "Elsewhere and Elsewhen" to teleport herself and her friends into the Titan's Skull, beneath the Archive House.
    • When Luz and her gang teleport to the skull, a rendition of the score from Amity and Hunter's fight in "Eclipse Lake" plays.
  • Camila's past mistakes included moving the family to Gravesfield to get Manny to a better hospital, which was mentioned by Luz in one of her video diaries in "Thanks to Them".
  • Amity guesses that Luz's egg will hatch into an otter, a reference to Luz's otter onesie from "Enchanting Grom Fright" and "Wing It Like Witches".
  • As shown in "Hollow Mind", a palisman's soul lives on in the body of those who absorb its magical essence. Since Flapjack gave his life willingly to save Hunter unlike the many palismen whose lives Philip/Belos stole, Hunter doesn't suffer from the same problems as Belos did (the palisman souls would continue to fight against their murderer over control of his body), but even has conscious access to Flapjack's powers (supernaturally fast movement).

Allusions[]

  • Amphibia - Graffiti of Bibsy appears on the side of a building the kids pass by. Also, one of the Hexside students seen in the background of the gymnasium is designed to resemble Anne Boonchuy.[9]
  • Gravity Falls - Hooty's puppet form has a pine tree and shooting star, referencing his voice actor Alex Hirsch series' main characters Dipper and Mabel Pines.[10]
  • Spider-Man - One Penstagram handle reads "FRIENDLY_NEIGHBORHOOD_POINTYHEAD", in reference to two of the titular character's additional monikers: "The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" and "Webhead".
  • Star Trek - Camila praises Hunter by mentioning that he "Beamed [them] up", in reference to the well-known (but often misattributed) catchphrase, "Beam us up, Scotty."
  • Star vs. the Forces of Evil - The text on the second page of the Collector's "story book", partially obscured in the episode, references the events of this series.[11] In particular, the passage implicitly refers to the characters Star Butterfly and Eclipsa Butterfly.
  • The Little Prince - The Collector's planet structure inside his room, as well as the fox underneath his bed appears to be a reference to the novella.
  • The Twilight Zone - The Collector turning Hooty into a Jack-in-the-Box resembles the character of Anthony Fremont from the episode "It's a Good Life" where Anthony turns a man into a Jack-in-the-Box before wishing him into the cornfield.
  • Herbalife - Camila admits she sold energy drinks as part of a pyramid scheme, a reference to the real-life Herbalife "multi-level marketing" company that sells dietary supplements and has been repeatedly exposed as a pyramid scheme.

Errors[]

  • When the Collector says "That's my best friend you're talking to. Hands off!", the captions transcribe "Hands off!" as "Heads up!". This error does not happen on Disney+.
    • When Hooty speaks to Lilith in his puppet form, the captions transcribe "Lulu!" as "Hoot! Hoot!". This error does not happen on Disney+.
  • In the beginning, when the Collector comes to Eda and says "You look fun. Wanna play?", the crack on King’s skull is missing.
  • When Luz and the rest arrive at the Owl House, the exterior is littered with graffiti, including the front door. When Luz opens the door later, the graffiti on the door is gone.
  • Amity's hair shading throughout the daylight palette in the special is incorrect and uses her purple hair shading, despite the fact that her hair has turned pinkish as of the last episode.
  • When Camila gets off Amity's staff and Amity puts it away, the staff disappears without effects.
  • When the Collector snaps his fingers to make the puppets appear, there is a layering error in which King and the Collector overlap the puppets falling which are supposed to be in front of them.
For the Future - 1180

Luz's scar is missing.

  • When Hunter is warning his friends that something is coming, Luz's scar on her left eyebrow is missing, but it reappears when she and her friends dodge the sparkle wave.
  • After The Collector transformed Terra into a puppet, as he spins on the star, the green skinned Demon is missing.
  • While the Banshees are gearing up, the outline between Cat's sock and her leg isn't present and Boscha's shoe is missing its spike.
  • Principal Bump's Abomination sigil is on his right wrist, but in "Escaping Expulsion", his sigil was on his left wrist.
  • Barcus' eye shape is incorrect when the draining spell starts.
  • When Luz tells Kikimora she has no ideas of her own, the line art on Amity's right glove is missing.
  • On the corkboard in the photo classroom, the picture of the younger Amity with Willow that first appears in "Understanding Willow" has her hair dyed green instead of naturally brown.
  • In the scene where Luz explains that she saw the glyph to teleport to the skull, the strands on Amity's costume are yellow instead of a dark teal like the rest of her costume.
  • When Belos climbs up to the Archive House, there is a small glitch present in all versions of the episode.
  • Near the end of the episode, Ghost's fur is colored incorrectly and becomes yellow in a zoomed out shot.
  • After the Collector ties Belos-Raine with the blanket, when both beds are shown, the blanket on the Collector's bed is still there. This is corrected in the later scenes with the Collector and Belos-possessed Raine.
  • After the Collector eavesdropped on King, Eda and Lilith a second time, the blanket disappeared for the rest of the scene.
  • In the credits, when the tea party with the Collector, King and the Coven Heads is shown, the Collector’s left hand is miscolored.
  • As the Collector suggests using Eda for the Owl House game, the Horned Healing Coven member is slightly moved to the left, replacing the green skinned demon.
  • As the Collector prepares to return with King to the Archive House, the dark skinned male witch is missing.
  • After Belos possesses Raine, the slime on their ear is missing in multiple scenes.
  • When Belos-Raine enters the bedroom of the Collector and King, the moon and star switches of the lamp switch places.
  • When Belos-Raine says “You take such good care of us Coven Heads”, Francois is missing.
    • The same happens when Belos-Raine and the Collector are face-to-face, before the Collector laughs at Belos-Raine’s warning.
  • When Belos-Raine extends their hand to possess the Collector, the moon symbol on their forehead is missing.
  • When Luz activates the teleportation spell, two light glyphs have the point miscolored.
  • Before Hunter teleports himself, Willow, and Gus out of the detention pit, his tooth gap is missing.
  • The lamp in the Collector's bedroom is turned off when Belos-Raine enters the room, but is shown to be on shortly after when the Collector is back in his bed.
  • As Belos-Raine enters the bedroom, the blanket of the Collector is seen over the edge of the bed, but inside the bed, when they come down.
  • When Stringbean transforms into her staff form, her staff mistakenly appears as if it comes out of her body, when it is supposed to attach to the ball on her tail.[12]
  • When Luz, Camila, Amity, Willow, Gus, and Hunter teleport to the skull, Camila’s earrings become yellow instead of a dark blue; This error is still present in the next episode.
