A Griffin is a hybrid species of fauna found on the Boiling Isles. It is likely the inspiration for the mythological depictions of griffins in the Human Realm.
Appearance[]
Griffins resemble their mythological counterparts, but instead of possessing the forequarters of an eagle and the hindquarters of a lion, griffins on the Boiling Isles have a vague feline build with the front half resembling pigeons. They are as large as a house and can spew cascades of spiders from their mouths (a trait Luz postulated prior to her arrival). Some griffins are kept by schools, such as Hexside, as mascots.
Background[]
Luz and Eda fly alongside one in "A Lying Witch and a Warden", where the spider-spewing is confirmed to be a trait of theirs. A griffin grabs Skara as she runs toward a Grudgby ball in "Something Ventured, Someone Framed".
In "The First Day", a juvenile griffin named Puddles appears and serves as Viney's medical assistant. A griffin is among the beasts shrunken by Tibbles and used in his Tent of Tiny Terrors in "Really Small Problems".
In "Any Sport in a Storm", Puddles, Viney's pet griffin, is seen chasing Hunter while flying in the sky. Hunter calls her a "flea magnet" and she steals his boot. Willow uses vines to grab her. When Hunter is thinking of a transfer area he sees Puddles grooming her foot, Hunter gets the idea, the toes. Later, she is seen licking Gus's hair. He has a traumatized expression on his face when Viney was tugging on her feathers trying to stop Puddles. Skara was laying on Puddles while catching up with the latest Flyer Derby strategies. While Viney put Puddles down for her nap.

Trivia[]
- While a student at Hexside, Eda released their griffin mascot from its pen and fed it spicy snacks until it vomited all over the grudgby field, while Principal Bump had a doughnut rather than cleaning it up.
- Griffin eggs are one of the few available foods in the Boiling Isles that are edible to humans.
- The Griffin's screech is a stock sound effect mostly used in other media such as: TMNT: Back to the Sewer, The Amazing World of Gumball, Heatstroke (2008), Code Lyoko and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012).
