"I Was a Teenage Abomination" is the third episode of the first season of The Owl House, and the third episode overall.
It premiered on January 24, 2020.
Synopsis
Luz sneaks into the local magic school to help a friend and makes a new enemy in the process.
Plot
Luz, Eda, and King are on the shoreline scavenging for human garbage from a beached trash slug, much to Luz's disgust. Luz was hoping to read ancient scrolls or mix potions, but Eda isn't interested in stuff that reminds her of magic school where they force students to learn magic the "proper" way. In her opinion, magic is wild and unpredictable which she finds beautiful. Because of this, she quit school to master magic the proper way. Luz leaves Eda to scavenge and makes her way back to the Owl House, thinking about magic school. She wants to see what it's like, and begins to doubt Eda's teachings. Along the way she encounters a witch-in-training named Willow, who gets bullied by fellow "top student" Amity Blight, who taunts her by having a better Abomination. Willow is having problems with her own Abomination, which has become nothing more than a pile of goo. Luz compliments Willow on her plant magic skills, even though she was put in the Abomination track, and decides to help her by covering herself in Abomination goo and acting as her Abomination; in return she'll get to see the magic school Willow attends.
Meanwhile, Eda and King get into an argument over being a teacher. King thinks Eda is going to lose Luz as her apprentice and believes he could do better, wanting to teach Luz about different kinds of demons. They decide to make a bet: King must prove he can be a better teacher by training a baby Trash Slug to be his soldier in one day. If he succeeds, he can have Luz as his apprentice, while Eda has to wear a shame hat, sleep in the shed and never come into the Owl House ever again. If King fails, Eda will change his name to Mr. Wiggles. Eda accepts, confident she'll win like she always does.
Willow sneaks Luz into Hexside School of Magic and Demonics, where they meet Willow's friend Augustus, whom Luz nicknames "Gus". During the Abomination class, the teacher fails one of his students, and warns the class they will get extra homework if the next presentation is bad. He instructs Amity to wait her turn, and selects a nervous Willow. The other students are certain "Half-a-Witch" Willow will fail. With encouragement from Luz, Willow presents the goo-coated Luz to her class. Luz successfully pulls off her role, impressing the teacher; Willow is even made "top student", which enrages Amity. She suspects foul play and threatens to expose Willow at the first sign of deception.
Back at the Owl House, King starts "training" his Trash Slug (whom he names Prince Jr.) by feeding it treats. However, his efforts to get it to respond to commands are unsuccessful as it's more interested in the treats he gives it. Eda eventually notices that Luz has disappeared and Hooty hints to her that she is at Hexside. Eda is upset by this and believes she has lost her student along with the bet. She returns home, admits defeat and locks herself away in the shed, wearing the shame hat. The Trash Slug grows immensely due to King overfeeding it with the treats, and reacts violently against King when he runs out of them. King, admitting defeat, begs Eda to help him against the Trash Slug, which she agrees to.
Back at school, Amity is keeping a close watch on Willow and Luz. She gets sent to Principal Bump's office when she tries to force the truth out of Luz; however, she is later able to convince Principal Bump to take a closer look at Willow's Abomination. Much to Luz's horror, he wants to dissect her. Gus makes a distraction long enough for Willow and Luz to escape. Principal Bump locks down the school with powerful magic, trapping them inside. However, using a seed Luz had gotten from Eda earlier, Willow unleashes vines upon the school, trapping the Principal and giving Luz a chance to escape. A furious Amity stands in the way, but Willow holds her off while Luz escapes.
King defeats the slug by feeding it salt, causing it to shrink. Just then, Luz returns, crying for help, only for Willow and Gus to show up a moment later with good and bad news. The good news is that Principal Bump, impressed by Willow's powerful display of plant magic, has moved her to the plant track. The bad news is that Luz has been banned from the school, but Luz is content with this. She apologizes to Eda for leaving and comes to appreciate Eda as her mentor, who is also glad about Luz getting her own "wanted" poster.

Production notes
- Storyboards show Boscha in place of Mary during the first scene in the abomination homeroom. This implies that Boscha was originally meant to be in said track.
Allusions
- One Piece - Luz's pose in her "banned" poster closely resembles Monkey D. Luffy in his "wanted" posters from the anime and manga.
- I Was a Teenage Werewolf and I Was a Teenage Frankenstein - The title of the episode is a parody to these popular horror films.
- iPhone - The back of Gus' Tween Stars magazine he reads has an ad for a "YPhone 9", as a reference to Apple's line of smartphones. Notably, in real life, Apple skipped the iPhone 9.
Errors
- During the scene wherein King tells Eda that he has technically won their bet, one of his toes is not colored in.
- When Luz is first introduced to the dump place, the monster is drooling. After one scene, the drool is gone.
- When the egg shell on King's head cracks, the shells aren't shown when Eda is leaving the scene.
- When Eda is looking at the classmates, the little kids are not in the place mat. When the POV changes to inside the classroom, the kids now sit on the mat.
- Additionally, the pink, beak mouthed student is shown on the mat, even though he wasn't previously shown inside the classroom.
Red line animation error.
- In the scene where Willow, Gus and Luz are eating together, just as Amity jumps onto the table, a horizontal red line can be seen near the top of the screen for one frame.
- When Willow and Luz run away from the teacher, they are against a wall with no lockers, but when the POV changes, the lockers appear behind them.
- When the giant snail is kicking down the door, some pieces of wood fall on the floor, but when King is getting dragged out, the pieces of wood are gone.
- When Willow and Luz were running from the abominations, they were right behind them, but the abominations vanish a few frames later.
