This is a list of unproduced episodes and plotlines of The Owl House. Throughout the production of The Owl House, certain episodes, plotlines, and story ideas were conceived of, but ended up being changed or abandoned. This occurred for various reasons: some were due to a story idea simply not working well, some were a result of the shortened length of the third season, and some were due to various other causes. Knowledge of these unproduced ideas comes both from statements given by members of the show's crew, and from various behind-the-scenes production materials that have been released onto the internet.
Zack Marcus' notebook[]
On May 1, 2023, story writer Zach Marcus posted excerpts from a notebook containing his notes, plot ideas, and sketches from during the development of the first season of The Owl House onto his Twitter profile. These excerpts contain descriptions of various unproduced ideas and plotlines, along with outlines of unproduced versions of certain episodes.[1]
Early versions of "Lost in Language"[]
An early setup for what would eventually become "Lost in Language" involved Luz, Eda, and King attending a school play about the history of the Boiling Isles, with Willow being part of the production, and with Amity also being present. During the play, Eda points out to Luz various "flaws" in its telling of history. Afterwards, Luz would congratulate Willow for her performance, but also relate Eda's comments about the history. Luz would then be taken to the library to prove her wrong, leading to further plot developments involving Luz and Amity together in the library. Another plot point in this version involved Eda and King being thrown out of the audience, only to return in disguise to mess with the school.[2] Another plotline from early versions of the episode involved Eda going on a date with a crow-headed merchant named Corvis as a ploy to scam them.[3][4]
Early versions of "Something Ventured, Someone Framed"[]
Zach Marcus has described "Something Ventured, Someone Framed" as being an episode that went through "a lot of iterations". Originally, the episode involved Gus participating in a "ritual flower cutting ceremony", overseen by Lilith. Eventually, Gus would learn the flower was in fact a part of an animate creature, causing him to refuse to take part in the ceremony. This later developed into another version of the episode in which Willow would secretly steal the plant creature before the ceremony, causing Gus, Lilith, and Luz to investigate the disappearance, with Luz being the one to figure out that it was Willow.[5][6]
King-Camila episode[]
One of Zach Marcus' ideas for a Camila-focused episode involved King texting Camila under the guise of being Luz in order to use her as a therapist. The plot would then progress with King sending a package of unspecified "things" to Camila in the Human Realm. Luz, after discovering all of this, would become mortified. In order to stop Camila from opening the package, Luz and King would take Eda's portal key and go to the Human Realm, with them at some point losing the key and needing to find it.[7]
Unused King subplots[]
One excerpt from Zach Marcus' notebook features various unused setups for King-related episode subplots, including:
- "King learns to paint"
- "King finds a language learning casette tapes [sic] (self help tape), and learns they are phantoms leading King to ____"
- "Spider baby decides that king is its mother"
- "King tries to write his own fan fiction. Its not very good"
- "King is tasked with ridding the Owl House of mouse ticks that inhabit some of Hooty's lower regio[n]"
- "King reads The Secret Art of Tidying Up"
- "King street hustle"
- "King recieves [sic] a letter from... THE FUTURE.... spooooky...."
- "King's skin molts — ie his birthday which horrifies him, 'what are these changes!?!' — tapes his skin down to keep it from molting, it starts to bubble off"[8]
"No Tree Left Behind"[]
On May 24, 2024, the storyboards to an unproduced episode of season one titled "No Tree Left Behind" were leaked onto the internet. The A-plot of the episode focuses on Eda and Luz attempting to celebrate the witch holiday of Arborgeist, which is centered on the rare and revered Arborgiest trees. However, they soon learn that the emperor has banned the holiday, and that all of the Arborgiest trees are to be cut down. Eda teams up with a group of disgruntled Plant Coven members to defend the Arborgeist tree in Bonesborough from Lilith and the Emperor's Coven, but backs down when Lilith threatens Luz's life. The B-plot focuses on King attempting to celebrate the demon holiday of Hurk'ullack by hosting a party at the Owl House. The episode ends with Eda and Luz joining in with King's celebration, before then planting a recovered Arborgiest sapling in front of the house.[9]
"Homesick"[]
On May 24, 2024, the storyboards to an unproduced episode of season one titled "Homesick" were leaked onto the internet. The A-plot of the episode focuses on Luz attempting to impress Caduceia, her healing track teacher at Hexside. After failing multiple of Luz's grades, Caduceia offers to give Luz extra credit for performing a homework assignment. The assignment seemingly goes awry and creates a plague that infects Hooty, making him sick. Eda calls Caduceia, who sends her and Luz into the Owl House with a "healing salve" to cure Hooty. However, rather than cure him, the salve instead grants Caduceia full control over the house. Caduceia reveals that everything that had occurred has been part of her plan to take Hooty for herself and present him to the emperor, as a means of being promoted out of Hexside. Luz is able to draw a glyph around the house that heals and frees Hooty, allowing him to quickly subdue Caduceia. The B-plot focuses on King trying to prove himself as more worthy of Eda's trust than Owlbert. They are both tasked by Eda to keep the Owl House safe from the Demon Hunters, who are later revealed to have been hired by Caduceia. Though they initially feud, King and Owlbert are able to band together and defeat the Demon Hunters. The episode's C-plot follows Eda attempting to have her portrait painted by Tiny Nose, who becomes frustrated at the interruptions caused by the A- and B-plots. In the end, Tiny Nose creates a painting falsely depicting herself as the one to defeat Caduceia.[10]
"The Dollhouse"[]
Main article: The Dollhouse
"The Dollhouse" is an unproduced sixth installment of the Owl Pellets series of animated shorts. The short focuses on Tiny Nose attempting to sell dolls that she repeatedly and suspiciously insists are not cursed.
The short was never finished due to it being "deemed too scary to air" on television. However, a voice-acted animatic of the short was released online by Zach Marcus on August 25, 2021.[11]
Seasons 2–3[]
In May 2021, it was announced that the third season of The Owl House would consist of three 44-minute specials, rather than the expected season order of 20 episodes.[12] During a livestream hosted on February 17, 2023, and featuring several writers for the show (Zach Marcus, John Bailey Owen, Madeleine Hernandez, Emmy Cicierega, and Mikki Crisostomo), it was stated that the news of the shortened third season came to the show's crew in the middle of season two's production, and during the early exploratory development of season three, leading to effects on the content of both seasons.[4] This was later reiterated by series creator Dana Terrace in a livestream hosted on April 28, 2023, during which Terrace emphasized that most of the ideas and plans for season three and the second half of season two had not yet been turned into outlines or scripts before being affected by the shortened final season.[13]
These two livestreams, along with subsequent convention and event panels, serve as sources of information for some of the ideas, concepts, and plans that were had during the development of seasons two and three, from both before and after the news of the shortened final season came to the crew.
Shortened plotlines[]
During the April 28 livestream, in response to a question about how the writing for the second and third seasons was affected by the shortening of the third season, Dana Terrace mentioned that certain plotlines which had been set up in season one and the first half of season two ended up being dropped. Terrace mentioned the Galdorstones, the Coven Heads, and the Bat Queen as being the focuses of plotlines that were dropped.[13] In the earlier February 17 livestream, Zach Marcus and John Bailey Owen specified that the plotlines about the Coven Heads would have focused on drama and infighting between them.[4]
Racing episode[]
During the February 17 livestream, several of the attending writers discussed a scripted but unproduced episode that involved King participating in a mother-child racing event. Odalia would also participate in the race using a fake abomination child, which Edric would form a rivalry with. One moment in the story had this fake child being "killed" and its head falling off, with Odalia having to put the head back on. The episode would have seen Eda and Odalia feuding with each other, stemming from their involvement in a school production of the musical "Rats" as students; the episode would therefore have contained musical elements. Mattholomule's parents were also featured in some capacity.[4]
Eda's gold tooth[]
During a panel held at Requiem Cafe on February 17, 2024, Dana Terrace was asked about what happened to Eda that resulted in her having a golden false tooth. Terrace responded by saying that there was a storyline that she had wished to do which would have provided the answer.[14]
Season 3[]
In the February 17 livestream, the attending writers mentioned certain story ideas that were had during the development of season three, but which were not produced. Zach Marcus mentioned a version of "Thanks to Them" with the main characters "piloting Abomatons like they were mechs, like in the desert", while Emmy Cicierega mentioned there being story ideas for "Vee being really uncomfortable with Hunter in the house".[4]
Later, during a Q&A panel at Momocon 2024, Dana Terrace was posed the question of what episodes might have been in season three if it had not been shortened. In response, Terrace revealed that Zach Marcus had repeatedly pushed for a baseball-centered episode for season three. Terrace additionally stated that she wished to have done a second flashback episode to Eda and Raine as kids.[15]
Series ending[]
During the April 28 livestream, Dana Terrace revealed that the ending that was originally conceived during the show's development was not able to be produced, due to it requiring more setup than the series' shortened runtime would have allowed for. Terrace stated that she still holds out hope for a chance to produce this ending, to serve as a bookend to the show's story.[13]
