The portal key is the key used to activate the portal door when inserted into the lock. It can be used to summon the portal to the owner, or make it appear out of thin air by pressing the button on its bow. The button contains Titan's Blood, a powerful substance that can create rifts between different realms.
Appearance[]
The key is a brown, double-bitted key with an eye-shaped button on its bow.
As of "Eclipse Lake", Amity has cracked the key's button, which made the Titan's Blood inside leak, giving it the appearance of tears coming from the eye.
Background[]
While running away from her mother, Eda tripped on the portal buried in the sand. When she picked it up, the portal folded open by itself, with the key already inserted in its lock. Some time later, Eda learned that she can use the key to summon the portal to her or make it appear out of thin air, and had been doing so since when using the portal. Examples of her doing that can be seen in "A Lying Witch and a Warden" and "Young Blood, Old Souls".
In "Young Blood, Old Souls", despite having to destroy the portal, Luz managed to hold onto the key, and has been using it as a basis to study how to make her way back to the Human Realm ever since. In "Eclipse Lake", when Luz gets sick with the Common Mold, she tries to eat the portal key in a state of confusion. This forces Amity to take it from her, and she places it around her neck. Later, Amity learns from Hunter that the portal key contains Titan's Blood. While trying to be nice to Hunter by offering her hand to him, Hunter notices the key dangling from Amity's neck and tries to grab it, resulting in a fight between the two. Amity manages to stop Hunter eventually, but is forced to hand the key over to him when he threatens to harm Luz. Before doing so, she manages to break the button on the key, leaking half of the Titan's Blood onto her glove while the key is cracked and continuing to seep the blood. Nonetheless, Hunter successfully delivers the key and the remaining blood within it to Emperor Belos.
By the time Belos finalizes his preparations for the rebuilt portal in "Clouds on the Horizon", Belos wears the key around his neck, revealing only a sliver of its blood remains. He later uses the last of the blood in "King's Tide" to power the portal, leaking the blood from the key into a device hooked up to the portal.
