Yeah, while you were celebrating your "victory", I caught this guy. It means we automatically win. All magic sports are like this.
—Boscha to Luz, "Wing It Like Witches"

The Rusty Smidge is an object used in grudgby. If any player locates and attains the Rusty Smidge, their team automatically wins the game.

Appearance[]

The Rusty Smidge appears to be a glowing, bright yellow stag beetle. It has eight legs, dark teal eyes, and shiny interlocked golden pincers, in between which is a circular turquoise faceted gemstone with a darker middle pentagon.

Background[]

During the grudgby game between the Banshees and Luz's team, Luz and her friends score enough points to win. However, the Banshees' score suddenly increases to the maximum value of 999, stealing the win and surprising Luz. Boscha reveals the Rusty Smidge in her hand, which was caught in the last seconds of the match, and states that anyone who obtains it wins the grudgby match for their team, as per grudgby rules and all other magic sports. Luz, furious, calls this rule stupid, denouncing it for rendering all players who don't seek it out as part of their role on the team effectively useless.[1]
