The Secret Room of Shortcuts is a room within Hexside School of Magic and Demonics filled with numerous doors and windows that lead to different locations in the school. It was created by Eda Clawthorne and later found by the detention track.

Appearance[]

The room is tall and roughly octagonal in shape, with walls that have the same gray-brick appearance as the rest of Hexside. A ramp spirals along the wall from the floor to the ceiling. The floor, walls, and ceiling are covered with trapdoors, front doors, and windowsā€”all of varying shapes, sizes, and colors.

Background[]

The Secret Room of Shortcuts as originally created by Eda Clawthorne during her time as a student at Hexside.[1] When Eda and Lilith Clawthorne attend Hexside, they use an entrance to the room on the outside of the school to escape punishment for being late. Lilith enters first with her sister about to follow, but Eda has to close the entrance before she is caught by Principal Faust and Vice Principal Bump.[2]

After Luz sticks up for the detention track kids, Viney allows her access to the Secret Room of Shortcuts. She, Jerbo, and Barcus use the room to secretly learn different types of magic. The trio found it after being thrown into the detention track. The witch who made it is simply known as "Lord Calamity", and their portrait is defaced, making their identity unknown. Beside the portrait are signatures of students who used the room in the past. Viney even offers to let Luz sign her name on the Troublemakers Wall, but before she can accept, Gus and Willow call Luz's name to try to find her, accidentally letting it slip that Luz initially looked down on the others. Feeling betrayed, the detention track kids shun Luz from their group.

When the Inspector absorbs Gus and Willow's magic, Luz takes them to the Secret Room of Shortcuts to get them to safety and to request help. While Viney, Barcus, and Jerbo are reluctant to help at first, they agree once they realize how much danger the school is in. The group utilize the trapdoors of the room to defeat the Inspector. Principal Bump reveals the identity of Lord Calamity, which is none other than Eda Clawthorne herself.[1]

Trivia[]

  • While the room has access across the school, the actual entrance seems to be the blackboard in the detention track room, which is opened by drawing a large square and a key hole and tapping it like a glyph. In "The First Day", Luz kicks open a door from a hallway leading into the room, which suggests it can be accessed by other entrances.
  • The doors in the room open to seemingly every classroom in the school and most of the hallways. Unless fully opened, it does not appear to catch the attention of others in the area, which allowed the detention track to listen in on classes they were not a part of.
  • Principal Bump seems to be aware of the room's existence, as he conjured the paint-covered portrait of Lord Calamity that was inside it, knowing it was Eda under the paint and where the portrait was.
  • The following names appear on the Troublemakers Wall:
    • Jerbo
    • Viney
    • Barcus (paw prints)
    • The four remaining names (Sabrina, Rad Maddie, Chris, and Emmy) refer to the four storyboard artists for "The First Day".
