Luz: "Yes!"
Eda: "A place where magic energy just flows."
Luz: "YES!!!"
Eda: "A place like, the Knee!"
Luz: "YEEEEEEEEEESSS!!!"
The Knee is a region of the Boiling Isles. It is a snow-capped, mountain-like location formed from the raised right leg of the Titan.
The Knee is home to various towns and other structures on and around its top and slope, the known locations including the magic school St. Epiderm[1] and the dilapidated ruins of a city destroyed by Emperor Belos during his rise to power,[2][3] the former of which being located directly atop the Knee.
The Knee is known for being rich in the Titan's powerful, lingering magic, and it is said that ancient magickind were drawn to its natural magical presence, using it as a training site.[2] In addition, the inner caves of the Knee, being the veins of the Titan, were once sites for the mining of the highly coveted and magically potent blood of the Titan, but these sites have since been almost entirely abandoned due to the depletion and growing scarcity of the resource.[4]
Description[]
The Knee appears to be a tall mountain-like structure with high altitude. Most parts of it are covered in snow. It consists of several entrances leading to various tunnels, which are actually the Titan's veins. According to Hunter, ancient witches used to mine the veins for Titan's Blood, and that because the walls of the cave are made from the Titan's veins, which are reflective of magic, shooting any magic inside will cause it to bounce off the walls.[4]
Inside the tunnels, a substance called Fool's Blood can also be found. It signifies a decaying vein and touching it will make the tunnels become unstable; either it will collapse, or the ground will open up. There is a path inside that leads to Eclipse Lake, a lake which supposedly used to be filled with Titan's Blood but has since dried up.[4]
Background[]
According to Eda, in ancient times, the earliest witches came to the Knee to develop their magic, drawn to its natural power; a Slitherbeast also happens to live there. When Luz needed to master a second spell to enroll in Hexside, the Knee was used as a training ground.[2]
In the 1600s, after five years of searching, Philip Wittebane came to the place in order to seek Titan's Blood from Eclipse Lake and succeeded in doing so. Somewhere along the journey, he discovered Fool's Blood, and it caused the cave he was in to collapse. Philip was able to make it out alive, but his companions unfortunately did not.[4]
Some years later, Philip, now under the guise of Belos, returned to the Knee and burned down an entire town that was located here, so he could spread his false message of "unity" and the "dangers of wild magic". An old Golden Guard helped him to brand the town's population with coven sigils before activating a primitive version of the Draining Spell that made the witches and demons collapse onto the ground and convulse. Belos reacted to this saying that they still "had some work to do" and left the witches to die by the freezing temperatures of the Knee.[3]
The destroyed town later became ruins.[2]
