The Owl House is an American animated fantasy series, created by Dana Terrace. It premiered on January 10, 2020, on Disney Channel.
On November 21, 2019, ahead of the series premiere, Disney Channel renewed the series for a second season, which premiered on June 12, 2021.[2]
On May 17, 2021, the series was renewed for a third season, ahead of the second season premiere.[3] Thereafter, Terrace took to Reddit in an AMA to announce that the show was cancelled for “not fitting the Disney brand” and that she would be leaving Disney after the airing of the season finale. [4]
The series ended on April 8, 2023, with the 55-minute special "Watching and Dreaming".[1]
Premise
The Owl House follows Luz, a self-assured teenage girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to a magical world where she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda's apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting.
Production information
Terrace first conceived the idea of a girl learning to be a witch in late 2016.[5] That same year, she began to finally develop the story after a fellow writer called it "boring" and dismissed it as something no one would want to see.[6] She began researching influences and work from her college years, as she didn't feel "artistically or emotionally fulfilled," and eventually rediscovered the works of artists such as Hieronymus Bosch and Remedios Varo, which inspired her to create a show that featured strong surreal visual elements.[7] Terrace spent about two months developing 15 pages with a summary of a story and characters to pitch to different networks. She pitched the idea to Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon, with the former eventually picking it up.[6] Terrace admitted that Disney was the only network that allowed her to develop the series in a 22-minute format, as others were looking for 11-minute comedies.[8] The pilot was in development for six months between April to September 2017.[9] A separate animation test was also created around this time.[10]
On February 23, 2018, Disney Channel greenlit the series, alongside Amphibia.[11] On Twitter, many of the production crew announced their involvement in the series. On March 22, 2018, supervising producer Stephen Sandoval announced production such as casting, designs, music, storyboards, and writing had begun.[12]
On September 5, 2019, it was announced that Sarah-Nicole Robles, Wendie Malick, and Alex Hirsch, would be the main cast, as the voices of Luz, Eda, and King, respectively. That same day, it was announced that Tati Gabrielle, Issac Ryan Brown, Mae Whitman, Isabella Rossellini, Matthew Rhys, Eden Riegel, and Parvesh Cheena, would be part of the cast.[13]
On November 3rd, 2024, Terrace confirmed that the accusations of season 4 of the making of The Owl House or a spinoff show are false and that she is done with the production of the show for good.[14]

Trivia
- The Owl House is the sister show to Amphibia[47] and was originally scheduled to air alongside it in 2019, before the former was delayed to 2020.
- Both of the series share two of the same animation studios: Rough Draft Korea & Sunmin Image Pictures.[48][49]
- Both series share a similar premise of a teenage female protagonist (Luz/Anne) who gets transported from Earth to a mythical place and is taken in by a family while staying in the world they're in.
- Dana Terrace originally considered The Owl House taking place in the afterlife after Luz had died.[50]
- Dana Terrace was greatly influenced by Hieronymus Bosch's for the style of the show, and named Boscha and Principal Bump after him.
- The series was also influenced by Pokemon Red, a game Terrace's father, Thomas Terrace, an attorney in Hamden, Connecticut, gave her before his death when she was age 11.[51][52]
- The design for Luz's palisman, Stringbean, was partially inspired by the series' logo. This is due to the fact that, when the logo is turned upside-down, the 'L' in owl and 'S' in house form a silhouette which resembles a snake-like palisman staff.[53]
- After the premiere of the series finale, "Watching and Dreaming", a final rerun of the special the following day marked the end of regular reruns on Disney Channel.[54] The series continued to regularly air on Disney XD until it left its programming schedule on August 18, 2023 with a final rerun of "Clouds on the Horizon",[55] after which it would seldom air on that channel as well. The series remains available on transactional video on demand services and Disney+.
- It is unclear when exactly the series takes place. However, based on on the "GIRL LOST IN FROG LAND??" news article Camilla is reading in King's Tide, which directly references Amphibia, it can be inferred that it takes place sometime in the early 2020s.

- Amphibia:
- In the episode "The Plantars Check In", a bottle containing Eda's elixir from "The Intruder" appears in King Andrias's gift basket.
- In the episode "Bessie & MicroAngelo", King's skull can be seen as part of the armor Anne tries on. A guitar version of The Owl House Main Title Theme can also be briefly heard.
- In the episode "If You Give a Frog a Cookie", a blurred image of the Owl House can be seen on one of Dr. Frakes's monitors.
- In the episode "The Root of Evil", a sun/moon symbol resembling the insignia of the Collector can be seen in the background.
- In the Big City Greens episode "Present Tense", a King plushie can be seen in a claw machine in an arcade along some other Disney Channel figures from other Disney Animation shows, including Sprig Plantar from Amphibia, Wander from Wander Over Yonder, Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb, Rufus the naked mole-rat from Kim Possible, Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls, and Star Butterfly from Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
- In The Ghost and Molly McGee's Darryl Theme Song Takeover, one of Darryl McGee's scams involves selling cheap knockoff DVDs. Depicted is cover art of a parody of The Owl House titled The Hoot Home, alongside others parodying Star vs. the Forces of Evil, DuckTales (2017), Amphibia and The Ghost and Molly McGee.
- In Kiff's Disney Channel Theme Song Takeover, Kiff replaces Luz in a rendition of The Owl House's opening sequence.
- On page 174 of the Danny Phantom comic Danny Phantom: A Glitch in Time, a pair of characters resembling Luz and Amity can be seen in attendance for a speech by the mayor of Amity Park. It is the first reference to The Owl House in a non-Disney property.
- Amity Park has been the main setting of the series since its 2004 debut and is not an Owl House reference.
- In the game Transformice, Amity Blight's hair appears in the shop.
